Scope problem.

I have a 45 Leupold competition mounted on a 30 br and I can't seem to get away from the scope nipping my forehead when fired. If I move the scope forward I cannot get a full view to see last flag.It seem that a hole the size of a quarter is the best option I can come up without worrying about being hit in the forehead. Is this a problem that can be solved or is it what everyone experiences?

Are you shooting free recoil, if so...Quit it! :)
If you are not shooting free recoil, you have a major malfunction inyour setup procedure.
You will soon get accustomed to the recoil stroke and cadence and you will feel ready to shoot some free recoil.
It's really tough to shoot free recoil with a 30BR to me....anyway.

Here is something to look at. It could be that you are too far from the butt and not as square to the rifle as you might be. If you square up, you may actually have to move the scope back, but in this position I think that you will have a more positive stop for the recoil of the rifle on your shoulder. Also, since the bullet leaves the barrel well before the rifle has moved a quarter of an inch, coming up to touch the butt, and then backing off just slightly may get you in the position that you need to be. This is all just guess work, and truthfully, I think that for a given rifle weight, the more recoil there is, the less that free wold be my chosen style. I would probably shoot that rifle pinned to the stop, and be very careful about shifting my shoulder after I was on target.

I had the same problem nipping the bridge of my nose till I got one of these. It softens the blow & doesn't let it break the skin. It's called scope eye.

Boyd, I think you have some very good points that I will try on my next outing.I was shooting completely free recoil. It is a 13.5 lb rifle. Terry Leonard stock and it is weighted in the rear of the stock. I did notice after bloody nose that if I got into the rifle with my shoulder somewhat it did not hit me.I will have to work out a system that works to shoot this gun accurately. But when running a quick string I guess it will take time and lots of practice. Thanks for you time. Any more helpful advice will be considered.

I always prefer a full field of view in my scope. I have a March and a Nightforce. I'd suggest you limit the amount of free recoil by moving into the stock some. It's easier to work with a full view than to adjust scope shadow for consistency.

Like Boyd said, squaring my shoulders to the rifle fixed that problem for me. An experienced and very capable BR shooter from Maine helped me solve the problem while at a BR clinic.
