Scope,mount and ammo?

Looking at taking a course soon have the rifle need the rest looking for some suggestions.
This is the write up of the course.

“The Precision Rifle Level III is where all your knowledge, experience and training is pushed to the next level. This course is about extreme long range, and is heavy in advance theory of long range shooting, and gives the students the skills to engage targets out to ranges which normally aren’t attainable. Our range has steel targets from 200 to 2500 Meters, so we can push you and your rifle as far you’re capabilities will allow. Below are several topics that you will cover.
  • Theory of long range rifles
  • Advanced ballistics
  • Skill of reading wind
  • Advanced long range field firing exercises
  • Long range spotting exercises
  • Integrated use of ballistic computers, laser range finders, wind meters.”
I was considering the Leupold I Mark 5 HD 5-25x56. However after reasearching the living crap out of it. Not available in Canada(or at least I couldn’t find it). Even the Mark 6 mount is ITAR restricted.

So here we go the rifle is a Trued Remington custom shop 700 Sendero 1-9 twist 7mm rem mag,HS- Precision stock(bedded), Fat bastard break and triggertech trigger. I have been toying with the idea of a 40 MOA NF rail with a 20moa NF unimount. Sightron SIIILR MD/CM 8-32x56. Handloadeds consisting of 168gr Bergers (open to suggestions on this as well).

If you were me what would you put on this rifle? I want to hit out to 2500meters. Ultimate goal cold bore 2500.Open to any Ideas or suggestions. The less I spend on optics/mounts the more I can spend on brass and RL components. 400 rounds needed for this course.

Thank you

I dont think you have the power or the twist to shoot 2500yds with that setup. You really need an ivey adjustable mount and at least a 34mm tube scope- probably need a 40mm terminator. A fixed mount wont work at close range and long range. You can go 0-1400 yds comfortably with your rifle with skill of course but they seriously cant expect you to cold bore hit at 2500 during a class or even in a long time of practice. It takes serious ELR systems to hit a house that far away

Thanks for the reply I know the 7mm is capable of this shot it’s been done before (watch the link below). If I can push a .308 1250m I think the 7mm should do 2500m. The cold bore shot is just a personal goal (possibly a pipe dream). I figure once I have a table of firing solutions I might be able to get a cold bore. I might be a fluke but I’ll take it. I have looked at the IOR stuff, too much $$$. The Norma brass alone will cost me $800 Canadian pesos (that’s my girlfriends cost on it too). Love the Ivey mount, thought crossed my mind lots of $$$$ and I would rather put it on a caliber more worthy of it, like .408 Cheytac or my brother in laws Cadex Tremor in 50BMG.

Have you shot groups @ 1K with your set-up? What is your reloading experience and what steps?

I would move to 180 Bergers. That's the heaviest your twist will stabilize.
Good luck, you're gonna need it.

Not with this one just got the rifle. I have shot past 1k, .308 Rem 700 1-11.25 twist 5r HS Stock. Factory set up. 20 MOA Badger rail and a el cheapo Millet LRS. Which is now on my 22-250 coyote gun.

What is your reloading experience and what steps?

Been RL since I was knee high to a grasshopper. I am so anal when it comes to reloading you couldn’t drive a pin up my ass with a sledge Hammer. Consistent single digit SD’s. The only factory ammo I buy us 22lr.

I would move to 180 Bergers.

I will have to try both before I commit to sorting 1000 projectiles by base to ogive.

That's the heaviest your twist will stabilize.

Start with luck leave with skill.

Not to sound offensive by any means, but I agree with Dusty. You can watch all the videos you want, but you are way undergunned for 2500 meters.

You'll probably struggle to even hit 1500 meters with any sort of consistency using the 7mm Mag with 168gr Bergers

In the video, he's shooting the 195 Bergers, a whole other animal in a 7mm rifle. They won't stabilize in a 9 twist. As others have posted, I would rethink your choice of firearm.

I would be curious as to how may minutes of angle you need to make 2500 meters?
Assuming your cartridge has the steam to get there, I would not be concerned with High power scopes rather mechanically sound with lots of internal adjustments and a 1 Moa reticle.
Example- a SWFA 3x15 has 140 total Moa with a 30 Moa hash mark reticle for hold over, maxed out that's 100 minutes set that on a canted rail and maybe just maybe..
Google a guy named Rex whose known for long range first round hits.
I'm following so keep us in the loop
Jim
EDIT- I use that scope and once ranged a target at OVER 1600 yards I would never take that shot however the site picture was fine"
With a capable cartridge and a more experienced driver the target could be hit for sure.

This shoot was held yesterday, a 28 nosler didn't fare well, matter of fact, only a few 338's did ok. Distances were a far cry from 2500 yards.
When this ELR craze was budding, guys with inflated estimations of their abilities abounded, we don't see or hear much from them today. In the real world there is wind, on a bluebird day, a lot of things are possible.
I can cold bore 1450 over 50% of the time with any 6mm I own, does that make me good, or is it an accomplishment, NO, it means I'm acclimated to my home range and it's wind patterns.Acc shooter.jpg

Take a look at the scopes used by the top 5 competitors at the King of 2 Miles. You don't need a massive magnification scope.

Agree. My 2¢, These super extended long range "schools" are just another creative method to lighten shooter's wallets.:p:D

This course is for UP TO 2,500 yards. So if he can learn in this course what it takes to hit steel at a mile with a 7mm RemMag then it's worth attending regardless of how much farther the course goes.

180 Berger is about the only logical projectile for your setup.

The fella who won the King of 2 miles this year used a Bushnell XRS II that he used for the very first time 24 hours prior to the KO2M shoot.

I have a XRS and I think it's a plenty good enough scope for any ELR.

SPUHR Mount is as good as they come. You can get them with a fair bit of cant for ELR shooting.

A 7-35 NF F1 seems to be the gold standard most elr shooters want. In a competition, the shooter is aided by 2 guys on some expensive spotting scopes. If you shoot by yourself, you'll want to spot your impacts.

No hits with the 6.5 CM???????? That's gotta be a typo. No way that's possible!!!!! ;)

I disagree so much with this. How tough is it to hit steel at a mile with 7 mag? You take a coarse, shoot in one direction, maybe even the same wind pattern for 2-3 days. All you've done is pissed away money, people learn a heck of a lot more when they figure something out on their own. Even if something happens on a day, and there is no answer, later on you'll revert back to it and a light comes on.

I just built a 300 Norma Mag Improved with a 31" long 1 in 8" twist barrel specifically throated for the new Sierra 230gr MK bullets that have a .800 G1 BC. Should be able to easily push them up around 3100 fps. Even so, it will be no easy task whatsoever for me to land rounds on target 'consistently' at 2000 yards. I wouldn't even consider a 7mm Rem Mag for the same task. That's my last $.02
