Scope help

I have a new Reminton 700 VSF .308 sitting at home currently. I am trying to decide on which scope to buy. I am going to be using this as a bench gun. I will be practicing with it a lot from 100-600 yards and I will eventually,probably later this summer) be using it to shoot 1000yard competition and any other competitions I can find around here. I was leaning towards a Leupold VX III 6.5-20x40, since I am on a tight budget. But I am asking myself now, why not just buy a fixed 36x target scope? So for my purpose should I buy the 6.5-20x or the 36x?

Probably a fixed 36x would not be the best choice for the type of shooting you are describing. Those scopes are great for 100-200 yard benchrest competition, but I don't know of anyone using them for long range. If you could afford it, a Nightforce or Mark IV Leupold would be a nice compliment to that rifle. However, if money is an issue,as it often is) you may have to compromise and go for less now and upgrade later. Allow me to ask this, is the rifle stock or has any custom work been done to it,action trued, ect)? Also, check out the link below as it does a good job of rating various scopes. Hopes this helps.
