Scope for Ruger 22/45 pistol

I bought a little Ruger 22/45 a few years back when I ordered my 22 can, and I am just now getting around to wanting to play with it. I bought the one with picatinny rails on top and bottom. It has no iron sights, so I need to place some type of optics on top. What do you have that you like? I don't really need magnification as 25 yards will probably be the extent of my shooting with it.

any suggestions based on your own personal experiences (not what uncle Bob has always told ya).

Burris Fastfire or Leupold 2X, I run them both. You won't really notice the magnification at 2X. I have a Burris 2 1/2X also and it works with really no noticable magnification on a EER.

If you are shooting off hand, I'd go with a 1" ultradot. Most common sight at BE matches. I have 3 and none have failed from .500 smith down to a .22 conversion unit.

+1 I have had about 8 on everything from 22's to 44 Mag's and no problems ! I found that you don't need magnification , just something to aim with .

I had a 4X Weaver using an ugly B Square clamp on mounting system. Using it, turned the 22/45 into sort of a pocket rifle up to 100 yards when shooting from sand bags or rolled hay bales. But for off-hand or normal type handgun use or shooting from a rolled down truck window I would go for a 2X. I am now looking for a replacement and might go for a variable power scope and a Ruger MK4 with out the B square stuff.

I'll cast another vote for the Ultra Dot. Excellent results with the 11 I'm running on a variety of Bullseye 22's & 45's. My dogging partner & I have a rule that if it's under 150 yards, the Ruger MKll's with the Ultra Dots are used. As qtl1946 mentioned, you don't really need magnification just the aiming point. At 25-100 yards, the 1'' 4 min is entirely sufficient for targets the size of ground squirrels. After 100 yds I like the Matchdot that has a variable dot size that can get down to 2 min.

I've got a new 22/45 Lite still in the box. Would a scope be better or a red dot system for plinking and fun gun stuff at the range??

As I said earlier a dot because you really don’t need magnification at pistol ranges ,you just need aiming “help” . It’s much easier to put a dot on what you want to hit than to line everything up and put that on what you want to hit. Also scopes tend to increase the shaking and that throws you off and tends to make it more difficult to aim.Much easier to aim with a red dot!

is the vortex and the ultra dot close to the same?

Install a 4X Leupold EER scope in Warne QR medium rings zeroed at 50yds.
Hold at the 6O'clock duplex post +3" for a 100yd zero w/ standard velocity LR ammo.

The Ruger MkI's thru MKIV's are capable of capping small game(hare/grouse/ptarmigan) at 50 thru 100yds....if you do your part!

The 1/2 dozen Ruger MK 1 & 2 pistols in my possession have Leupold 2X & 4X EER's mounted in Warne/Leupold QRW/Talley Rem 541 bases in medium Warne/Leupold/Talley rings that will literally drive tacks at 50yds on 5.5" thru 10" bbl'd Ruger 22 pistols.

The local gun shop had a Black Friday special on the Vortex. I will sight it in and play with it this weekend at deer camp.
