scope bases????

i am putting weaver steel 2 pc bases on a rem 700,i put a staight edge on them and the rear base is .015 higher than the front. should i shim the front to match? or is this the way it was ment to be?

It is NOT meant to be that way. There are shim kits available to adjust the height. Even with the height compensated for by shimming I always hit my rings with a lapping bar if only to prove that they are properly aligned. Simply because it makes no sense to stress a scope that costs as much or more than the rifle.

Case in point my little F/TR project which is essentially an out of the box 700P. The Nightforce on top cost quite a bit more than the rifle and while the action was pretty close, especially for a Remington) a few minutes with a lapping bar made it exact. Cheap insurance.

The other alternative is the use of live center rings like the Burris Signature series. If your rifle has some recoil get the heavier duty ones so the scope doesn't slip in the inserts.

i was gonna use a 1 pc base, but looking thru the two br books i have, all i see are 2 pc.never had this problem with any of my hunting guns.shimming is no problem,i can do it at work,i am a machinist). the guns i am setting up is a rem vls in .243.i signed up for a br clinic next month at the local range, gonna get my feet wet.i have a monarch 8-32 on order. i will be lapping the rings. would like to say hi to everyone.any body from north jersey?

joefish,
Don't do any thing but lap the rings. I know that a .020" shim in the rear equates to approx. 13 MOA on a long action 700. The .015" 2 piece bases on a short action is possibly 20 MOA. You should not have a problem getting a 100 yard zero.

baron, i think u are right, i shimmed the front base .020, i just got back from the range.at 50 yards i fired 2 rounds, they were 12 inches low.i adjusted the the vertical knob till i ran out of adjustment and was still low.the range officer checked my gun and said take the shims out. so i did, that got me in the 10 ring.hmmm, now i am back to having the rear base .020 higher than the front one.this cant be right. if i switch to a 1 pc base, screw it down, then put a straight edge on top,i am thinking it gonna rock back and forth.any thoughts?
