Scope advice on a budget

Have aproximately 400 to 600 dollars to spend on a scope. I will be practicing from 200 to 300 yyards and competing at 1000 yards any scope recommendations.

You can get a really good used Leupold in the 4 to $600 price range, and the forever warranty for whoever owns it is icing on the cake. If it ever needs repaired it will only cost you shipping to Leupold. They pay return shipping. I have never hesitated to buy used Leupold's.

As Frank said, the Leupold's may be the way to go. Look on ebay or gunbroker, thats where i buy my used Leo's. I have no problem buying a used leo either. Something on the order of a 6.5-20X50 will get it done for most distances. I personally like the pre 2004 VARI-X III scope over the 2004 and newer VX-III series. IMHO the glass is superior and they are simply built better. You can also date a Leupold scope by the serial # on bottom by the suffix letter, or prefix letter if it is older than about 20~ years. Heres the link to date Leupolds: http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/3178490/Re_Leupold_Scope_Manufacture_D

40x Guy gave sound advice.

A VX iii with Multicoat 4 lens coatings & target turrets, are usually a Mark 4 in a VX iii wrapper.

Don't overlook the Japan manufactured Tasco and Bushnell scopes. Usually sell in the 100 to 200 range.

If you scout around long enough, you can find great deals on used Leupy's. Have bought a couple Mark 4 16x40's and 6.5-20x50's in the 800 range. Yes, deals are out there.

I have used a 24X Weaver and Sightron for 1000yds. I have used 36X, but it can be too much power.

Xdshooter.....

As I said in previous replies before; I started out from scratch in F-class this year. I started with a Nikon Buckmasters 6-18X40 with Target turrets. I still have this scope attached, to the rifle I started the year with, simply because the optics were damn fine, problem was even at 600yrds the X-ring was hard to see, and everyone around me was shooting 32x to 36x scopes or more. At 200-300yrds the 18x was plenty.

That being said, before I settled on Sightron, I looked through a good deal of optics and Weaver T36's were not bad, especially when you figure the price, the only problem I saw was on really hot days the mirage could mess things up when you can't dial down.

Well, I'm in the busted wallet category having just received my stock, action, and barrel :) So, I'm real interested in what kind of Bushnell, Mueller, etc scopes (Max $275) are out there that I can use to get into the game. Based on my review of web site material and postings from this site - I'm also in the market for a "Bull's-eye" to help the lower priced scope adapt to my Mark 1 Mod 1 eyeballs.

Thanks everyone
