Scope advice needed

I may be replacing an old Leupold scope that is a fixed 34x BR model.
I only use it for shooting known distance such as developing loads for a new barrel at distances that range between 100 & 1000 yds.

My question is, should I stay with a fixed power or look at a variable power ?

What might be an advantage of having a fixed power scope?

Thanks,

If i was going to use the scope for your stated purpose I would take a look at the Sightron S-III 8-32x56. Good bang for your buck......For comp. I use a N.F. comp. 15-55 and a fixed 50 March.

I've never had an issue with my Nightforce benchrest 12X42 variable, shooting 100, 200, 600, and 1000 yards. I've used the fixed power 45 and 50x scopes and found them ineffective on high mirage days. Turning my Nightforce variable down to 32 power has helped in this situation. When I do this I go to the sighter and leave it set at that power throughout a match. A change of impact is the worst scenario that can occur with a variable. Of course there is the issue of weight to consider over a fixed power. Nightforce still has the best competition scope and best resale value of any scope out there.

Have purchased the Vortex and Sightron models and have found them lacking for one reason or another. Usually a little fuzzy at higher magnification. I always seem to drift back to the Leupold 8.5X25 or 6X20. I happen to be one of those folks that has to learn the hard way.

OP,,,,if you have a fixed Leu 34,,is it boosted ???,,,or is it a 36x,,,????,,,anyhow,,,I would stick with the Leu over any of the other bargain scopes listed,,,Roger

If your fixed power is parallax adjustable it should be comparable to a variable focus except that you reduce your possibility to "hold small .... shoot small" at greater distances. I'd prefer to have all the magnification I can possibly use and adjust it for shooting conditions if necessary. Obviously your reticle type is a prime factor also.

Hengehold,
If you are going to shoot at VARYING distances, I'd get a variable so that you can adjust for mirage in the warm weather. I shot pretty much strictly 100 yds and use a 35X & 36X fixed for my tired eyes. And I'm pretty much a Leupold man, but I'd definitely look at the Nightforce models for sure before buying. Might be time for "variety" and those Nightforce scopes are really nice.

I'm happy with my Sightron 10-50x60. I also like the variable scope in the mirage and low light conditions.

plus one for the Sightron 10X 50 x60mm i saw bullet holes at 600yds on 30X big advantage. in the $900.00 range.mike

I like my Sightron, and NF variable scopes. The advantage of a variable is that in extreme mirage, you can turn the powder down and the mirage is a tad less noticeable.
