Schedule 80 Wet Drum Question

In the process of building a wet tumbler. Have two 6"PVC schedule 40 drums and am using yellow Cherne mechanical plugs on open end. They are working GREAT. My problem is when I ordered an 8" Cherne plug I didn't think about my 8" PVC being schedule 80. Evidently the Cherne plug I bought is for schedule 40 PVC. Too big for the schedule 80. When I go to Cherne web site there is no mention of a plug that fits schedule 80 PVC. Does anyone know of a mechanical plug such as the Cherne that will fit schedule 80 PVC? Also if anyone is in need of this Cherne 8" mechanical plug for schedule 40 send me a PM, I will let it go for what I have in it.

Thanks for any and all input
Doug

Can you have someone bore out the ends bigger to fit the plug? Local Machine Shop could do it. I would do it if you were in PA.

Erick,
Had not thought about that. Don't have knowledge of local machine shops, but I will check into that. Could solve all my problems. What would something like that cost? I know it depends on who you use but do you have an estimate (guess)?
Thanks
Doug

Start calling plumbing supply houses to see if someone else makes a plug that would work.

Doug,

Hard to say price. Depends on area, size of shop, if they want to do it. Try a few places for a quote. Could range from $25 - $100. It is very simple so don't spend much. I would do it for a six pack. lol

It would probably be cheaper to buy a piece of schedule 40, which would probably serve as well. find out if any contractors in the area have water projects or scrap pipe. Good luck!

Exactly. Go with sched 40

If you haven't looked, check out McMaster.com and search for "Test Plug." They have one that will fit inside a 7.70-8.03" pipe. Part number is 2645K48. Measure the ID of your pipe and I bet it's close to 7.63 inches. I am also willing to bet, if you get the plug wet first, you will be able to get it in.

You could also do a properly sized Fernco. Slip over Sch 80, clamp, short piece of Sch 40 in the other end, clamp, then plug. Probably more expense than you wanted, but they are made. If you need stiffer, use a Dresser coupling.......:)

Most shops will charge an hour minimum (around here) and that's $85 on average.

FWIW, Schedule 80 is the same OD as Schedule 40? If so, pick up a Schedule 80 pvc Coupler, install on the end of your Schedule 80 pike, then install a short length of Schedule 40 pipe in the other end of the coupler as a bushing so your plug of choice will fit. Do this on one end and just put a PVC cap on the other end.

Thanks for all the input fellows. Lucky Shooter has both drums and is opening them up to fit plug I already have. I should be set as soon as he and I can get back together

Safe shooting
