Scar 20s Barrel pitting

Has anyone had a barrel look like this after 500 rd count? It’s looks like chrome lining split out and serious pitting/rusting is developing.

That barrel looks horrible for 500 rounds. I can’t believe how severe some of the pitting is.

Accuracy?
Still sub moa but last time I took it out to range was feb 2020 just before pandemic. I borescoped after cleaning and stored it in safe until last week , when I found above issue. It did not have this 2 years ago. I used bore tech carbon and copper remover and generous oil before I packed it away in safe. Don’t know if my safe was too humid. I will take it out to range to see is accuracy suffered or not. Just shocked at how chrome plate split out. Maybe I left bore tech copper solvent in bore too long even though bore tech does not have ammonia?

I bet the copper solvent loosened the chrome plating just like it would copper plating. And bore tech solvents will make a rust bucket out of a nice stainless barrel if you dont watch it close

Plating is only a stop gap measure in the throat area. It does not defeat heat transfer to the barrel steel. Once the integrity of the plating is compromised oxidation/pitting begins. Just a fact with chrome moly barrels.

Thanks. For those with chrome lined barrels, what is your cleaning regimen and what solvents do you use? Obviously my solvents and regimen does not work as video clearly shows...

My other rifles (SS) are all okay after 3k to 5k shots fired and years of similar cleaning regimen.

I don't know how barrels are chromed but weren't car parts copper plated before being chromed.
Actually copper, nickel, and then chrome.
I know nothing about this and I’m not a chemist but apparently this chrome plating process has been outlawed in many states for quite some time.
Naturally it’s the EPA and has to do with the chemicals used to do the plating and what happens to them afterwards.
I’m not interested in military weapons but there was a time we wanted the ones stamped with a ‘C’ on them as they were alleged to have a chrome lined barrel. I never saw anyone from the EPA with me checking.

The chrome on a car or motorcycle parts is nothing like the hard chrome used in the bore of a firearm.

Interesting discussing on barrel pitting on snipershide…

Took it out to range yesterday and still looks to be good shooter. As you can see first 5 shots at 100 were 1.5 MOA but started to settle gradually to 3/4 MOA. I guess I need to leave little copper behind when cleaning to cover the pitting just above lead...
