Scale?

What scale are you guys using? My digital scale just stopped working properly so I started reading reviews. I cant find a scale that doesn’t have bad reviews. It seems like several people are willing to disown each and every scale Ive been able to find. Im thinking im going to try a RCBS 505. Not very expensive and a lot of people say good things...

Any thoughts?

I'm using the scale attached to my RCBS Charge Master 1500 Powder Scale and Dispenser Combo. Never had a problem. Calibrates "right-on" each and every time.

I think the RCBS 505 is a well proven scale. So is the Redding balance beam. I have a Model 1 that is around 45 years old and going strong. You may not find that model now other than at a garage sale or used. Their Model 2 is current and nearly identical except it is magnetically damped instead of oil well.

An RCBS 505 is what I use. Suits me just fine with one caveat: Don't throw too much powder. I find if I have to remove powder from the pan I get discrepancies. So it takes extra time, but if I trickle too heavy I pitch the pan start over.

The fellow that tunes up scales (Scott) told me the old Lyman M5 scales were the best made and can be had on Ebay for pretty cheap. I got one tuned up from Scott and it will show when you drop a single kernel of Varget on it.

Seems that there are several older balance beam scales that work well.
I use an old cast base Hornady.

Cold temps and drafty areas are not conducive to accuracy of digital scales due to the rapid cooling and heating of the tiny load cells.

I have a 505, and an acculab vic-123.

505 worked great, I just got impatient with the beam scale. When I started sorting bullets and brass and such, I decided my time was worth the money.

The 0.02 gr accuracy was a huge selling point. The inevitable drift of any electronic scale took a while to get used to, but I haven't used my 505 since.

what do you fellas thik about the hornady lock-nload auto cgarge powder dispenser? i have been looking in the cabelas magazine for deals but i think this is the wrong place to look. anyhowjust saw this 1 and the price was better than most the others. i am not a competitive shooter but i would like to load the most accurate hunting ammo i can, so just wondering what ya'll think.

+1 on Scott Parker scales. I bought an Ohaus D5 and it is very nice to load with. Very smooth and sensitive. Scott is very good to talk to also.

JRANEY,

Accuracy need not be expensive. Most of the scales on the market from the inexpensive beam scales to the middle range electronic scales are all about the same for accuracy. The difference is your methods and attention to detail.

A custom tuned scale, Like Scott's, might be your best bet.

When it comes to scale, the thing that you are usually paying for, is speed.

just noticed that currently there is an HCB 123 scale someone is selling on the For Sale page and it would only cost a little more than one of the tuned up balance beams if you were going that route. Either one would precisely repeat just depends if your a balance beam or electronic type guy.
The beam seems just a bit slower and a more relaxed style and the electronic a bit faster but a little quirky watching the numbers bounce up and down on the scale while you watch it.

FWIW, I have been using a battery operated "Field & Stream" scale for a few years, a very simple basic model that does not drift and has been totally reliable, accurate to within 0.1gr. At around $145 I have found it to be good value. I am tempted by the new Denver Instruments 123 scale but not sure if the extra cost is justifiable.

Scott Parker's email is vld223@yahoo.com

I recently got a set of his scales he suggested the redding. They are a step up from my previous set I use them to keep my chargemaster honest.
