Scale for Beginning Reloader

Creedmoor Sports TRX-925 Precision Reloading Scale
I picked up one of these to sort primers and use a tuned beam scale with a web-cam pointed at it, run through an old laptop with a thrower, and the Little Dandy. After playing with the Creedmoor scale for a while, I have come to find out that it is very accurate with minimal drift. I wouldn't hesitate useing it to weigh charges. But as with ALL electronic scales, you have to keep and eye on them, which isn't difficult.

Regards
Rick

I have RCBS, Lee, and Redding beam scales. I use the Lee for everything these days including my match ammo. It is the most sensitive and accurate scale I have ever used in addition to being CHEAP. Just be sure to level your bench. It can be adjusted down to 1/20 gr if you so desire.
I also have one of these which is an excellent scale at his price point.

I started with an RCBS 505 beam scale, but if the person has money I'd go for something that will measure down to half tenths of a grain.

On my bench I have marked where the E scale and beam scale feet sit. Both are LEVEL. 100-200 rds a month you can throw a few tenths short into pan put on either scale and tickle up. Even the Amazon scale mentioned will be accurate to +,- a grad(like any other affordable scale).

I've been happy with my Redding #2 that I purchased used. Replacing the magnets with stronger ones settles it much quicker.
That works on most beam balance, including the Lee.

You can get away with useing an empty cartridge (30.06?) as a trickler. Simply drill out the primer pocket with a drill,,,say 2mm and use it like a salt shaker and cork/plug the case neck of course.

The cheap Amazon scale I posted, well it has got me to HM in long range F/open, an overall first place in Master at state match, very low es/sd, oh and I also use hornady LnL bushings on all my dies, Lee CND, and rem 7-1/2 primers. Getting everything else about reloading dialed in gives you a much wider window for powder charge, especially when proper load development has been done.

I throw charges at +/- .06gr with that Amazon scale. Spending money on the best measurement tools you can afford and learning what to measure when and how, will go a long way to allowing more leeway in other aspects of reloading. I see too many new reloaders not sizing properly but worrying about 0.02gr of powder.

I like decent digital scales. They are very fast these days compared to balance beams. If you don't mind the chinese ones they are just as cheap as some of the beam scales, easier to use and faster to settle.

Get a good trickler. One with a heavy base. Look up the 'hacks' to allow single kernel drops. I like the cast ones better than the plastic ones. It is a place to spend a little more as it is the key to easy, accurate loads.

Initial powder drops can be a set of Lee dippers or a measure. Just about any measure will work. Throw a low charge and trickle up. Most measures are good for +/- 0.1 gn depending on the type of powder.

After he has reloaded for a bit he'll know which way he wants to go in the sport. If he pursues Fclass, BR, etc then he can decide how much he wants to spend.

I would start him off with any of the name brand beam scales and a trickler. If he stays with the reloading bug he could then upgrade to one of the e-scales or higher grade dispensers. Anyone who reloads needs a good beam scale as a backup and to check the operation of whatever modern electric scale or dispenser he plans to use.
