SB Heavy 10 - Tool Post Question

That’s some good info. There could also be a problem with the dovetail fitting the tool holder. I notice mixing them on mine they all don’t fit the same.
The bigger tool posts often will work with normal cutting tools but cutoff tools can be a problem. I got one CXA on a GHB1340 Taiwan Jet. It's borderline tool tall with some cutoff tools. If you use indexable tool holder cutoff tooling, it may well set low enough, vs a hss blank. Of course you can put the cutting edge lower on the hss cutter, yourself when you grind it.

Phase II, wedge-type, AXA for that lathe is a good compromise for budget and quality.
I see no reason for a BXA on a 10", belt drive lathe used for smithing.
Most all of what we do is lighter cuts, and "tight" undercuts requiring smaller tooling to provide better access. 3/8" insert holders (or HSS) will get into the corner to face a barrel shoulder much better than a 5/8".
Yes, larger holders/tooling are more rigid than smaller, but IMO this is largely irrelevant for a small lathe used for barrel work.

A mill is needed to fit the t-nut to the compound rest with slip-fit precision.
