SB Heavy 10 - Tool Post Question

I also use AXA size tool post on my heavy 10. I bought a BXA first and it was too big. So I traded it for an AXA and couldn't be any happier with it.

Also stick with name brand. You will be tempted by the nock off stuff but trust me just cry once and get the right one.

I have an older Aloris catalogue, page 29 gives the recommended tool post size, AXA.

I have an Aloris BXA knock-off (Shars) and honestly, I don't see where Aloris is any better (though, I've only used an actual Aloris once on a friend's lathe). It's just a cube of steel; it's solid and true. What makes the Aloris $700 better than the Shars?

I will admit Shars does make better then your normal Chinese quality. I have not used their quick change tool post so I cant comment on that. But I have used another no name chinese brand tool post and they they didn't not seem as rigid. The dovetails needed to be stoned and they were still sticky. The set I had, out of the 5 took holder's that came with it only 2 would actually hold tight on the post. I didn't spend much time with it I was very frustrated.

I do have a few Shars brand tools in my shop and I have been very impressed with them.

By the way I did not spend anything close to $700 for my aloris, with 5 tool holders. I have probably added $700 in tool holders since the initial purchase. I use the AXA size I am sure they run a few dollars cheaper.

2000 for the set with 4 tool holders plus 260 for each additional tool holder. I’d like to see one of these in person. To pricy for me and what I do though
Would be easy to have 5K wrapped up in the tool holder.

Not sure what you mean. I have an AXA tool post on mine, no issues. It's a 4003

I think for the most part, it depends on the size of the machine. Too big a tool post won't go below the centerline of a small lathe. All that I can recall simply mount to the compound with a tee nut. There may well be exceptions to this but I think this is generally the case with most all lathes.

That’s some good info. There could also be a problem with the dovetail fitting the tool holder. I notice mixing them on mine they all don’t fit the same.
