SAVAGE TRIGGER

I have a Savage model 12 with the red blade target trigger. I want to reduce trigger pull to no more than 1-pound for prairie dogging. What do you suggest I do, replace it or will it adjust satisfactorily down to 1 pound?

I have not put a gauge on any of mine for a long time. Adjust it down as low as it will go. They are all very serviceable for what I use them for. Accuracy is king for that game, 1-1 1/2 pound trigger is quite usable and won’t make a lot of difference. Your bag or tripod setup is as important as anything. Imho a heavy gun is a plus, 15-20 pounds is not out of the question.
I will tinker with mine a lot before I buy another trigger. Still waiting on TT to come out with one but not holding my breath.

It will ADJUST down to 1 to 1.5 pounds.
To go lower requires some polishing and spring work.
This is with a Standard Trigger.

Did some more work and have a 2oz blade force, 7 oz total force. Light Savage triggers will likely require some SHIMMING to be stable.

Well lookie at those two springs that can be adjusted, replaced, or coils removed; all these options work.

I adjusted mine down as low as it would go. After you adjust it take a rubber mallet and tap the side of the action and see if it will trip the trigger at your set level. If the sear trips then you need to go heaver on the pull. I needed to add some thin washers on the trigger pin to take up the side slop of the trigger. I think I got mine down to 1.5 lb.

I latter went with a Timmey trigger.

Good luck with the dogs...

Some don't like Savage, some don't like the AccuTrigger with the safety blade, some don't like to work on their own guns.
I have two Model 12 Benchrest. I like them both. Both shoot great. I have the triggers set at a very reliable 6 ozs. I also have a custom with a 2 oz. Shilen which I like more.

You using the Accutrigger in your Savage Benchrest guns?
For 6oz what do you get for blade force?
The Accutrigger ain't gonna make 2oz and be safe and stable.
Gonna try the wife out later this week with her 2oz/7oz trigger.

Lol, I figured a Savage hater would show up. My old ugly as sin coyote rig, schooled a couple of guys on their rigs. Just leaves more for the rest of us.
Oddly Savage came out with the accu trigger, then it seems several others jumped on the wagon.
Yeah I have several other builds on Defiance,ARC and Bighorn actions, they all shoot well but I won’t say better. Anything with a chassis is a sows ear.
Saw a post here some time back “chassis rifles have no soul”.

Other than old battle rifles the only bolt gun I have is one I put together in the kitchen for the wife for a Christmas present.
We were doing 600yd F Class with kitchen assembled ARs.
Bought a Savage action, pretty blue laminated stock, and a Shilen SM 28" bull barrel.
Low recoil 22 Nosler.
Extra bolt parts to experiment with springs and lift kits.
Carbide to Ceramic lift kit (home made) and spring mods.
She likes it and it gives me the chance to learn this action.
No gunsmith required.

I have Rifle Basix SAV2s on all my Savage rifles. The sear engagement screw makes for a very crisp trigger. It's easy to get down under a pound, but mine are set around 1-1/4 pound.

A few of the benchrest shooters at the range I go to rave about the RB SAV-2 set in the few oz range.
I have one I bought on sale in the parts box but it will be some time before I even consider a pull that low for the wife. They really dog the Accutrigger.

Savage specs for the red blade target trigger are 6oz to 1.5lb. I have 2, both set 8 - 9oz which is where I'm comfortable with them. You should easily be able to reduce to 16oz.

Next time your around those fellows, tell them to slam the bolt shut, briskly. I would bet a steak dinner they trip off. Bench or range only, I DO NOT like those kinds of surprises.
I know some that talk them up, RB. I have come to the conclusion until you remove ALL of the Savage stamped parts, they will not be what the could be, safe and light.
Had one guy tell me to put the safety on before closing the bolt, then go to fire. Well I will just say it was unnerving at times, take the safety off and bang. Built in slop in the factory sear helps nothing.
I will just tinker with my factory accu trigger and go on as long as it does nothing foolish.

I have a couple of JARD and one SSS.
