Savage Target Action Tap and Die

Does anyone know where I can find a tap and die for the Savage Target Action. I found a Savage tap and die set on brownells but I believe it is for the small shank 110 type actions. It's my understanding that the barrel should be turned to 1.117 for the Savage Target Action before threading; can anyone tell me if this is correct. Thanks, Brian.

Most gunsmiths will simply cut the threads on the lathe for both the barrel and cleaning up the receiver. Using a large die requires a great deal of force and perfect alignment is difficult.

I have never had any improvement in fitting this area with anything less than 1.120. 1.124 seems even better. If you prefer some room when fitting here, be positive that your nut, recoil lug and receiver face are"SQUARE".

You can buy 1 1/16 X 20 and 1 1/8 X 20 taps and dies from MSC, Penn Tool, etc., less expensive than Brownells.

Dave Kiff at PT&G will make you a thread truing jig for a Savage standard or plus .010 for either size thread. Simular to the Manson jig for Remingtons. You will need the bushings to guide it. They are not cheap.

You can have this done by a gunsmith on a one off basis for less than buying the tooling.

If you want to do this in the lathe you will need to buy or make an action truing jig.

savage thread size is 1.050x20 not 11/16x20

The New Target actions and the Short action Magnum actions
are 1 and 1/8 X 20 and the older and standard actions are 1 1/16 X 20. I suggest you check the machinist hand book for the major OD and Minor OD for the tennon and receiver measurements.

The last time I checked 1 and 1/16 inches decimal equiv was 1.0625" and 1 and 1/8 decimal equiv was 1.125".

What is started with is not always what you finish with. But you sure as hell don't want to start too small.

Or send it to Kevin Rayhill spend $150 and have the entire action done correctly by a man that knows Savages. You will get no b.s. from him, just quality work.
