Savage target action stock choices

Any of you build a bench gun with a Savage target action. What stock did you use? I see Mcmill and others have lot's of bench stocks but they all seem to be set up for Bat or other high end actions.

The savage target action is a good one, I have a 6brx built on one. And it does well personally I would say skip the split port. Get a competition recoil lug, or have the factory one surfaced. Here is a great place for parts

I have a Stockade Prarie Dog Tactical on my target action and like it very much. I got the out of mold special with intentions of finishing it myself. I was completely surprised when I got the stock because it really didn't look that 'rough' to me. Sure it's got parting lines and stuff, but I use it and I'm pretty ok with the way it looks plus it's got all my information written on the stock with a sharpie - how cool is that!!

I think finishing it will be a good winter project. For now it's just too much fun to shoot.

Good luck,
Jeff

Not bench, but I built a 6BR on the Savage Target Action and used a Sharpshooters Supply Dogtracker and couldn't be happier with it.

I purchased a complete rifle off this suite last year and it arrived with a broken SSS Long Range Benchrest Stock, great looking stock but no longer usable. I couldn't get the seller 'Riemer' to make good on it even thou I had paid him to ship it insured. So I purchased a used SSS Thumbhole Benchrest from Larry Kauffman off this suite to replace the broken one, this stock arrived as advertised in good condition. I wouldn't normally think about purchasing a Thumbhole but the price was right and I needed a stock. I rebedded the lug and barrel area as my LP/RB Savage Target action is wearing a 28' HV contour Bartlein chambered in 6x47L set up with a SSS recoil lug without the barrel nut. After shooting the Thumbhole stock I was pleasantly surprised. Member P1Zombie Killer had invited me out to Big Rock Gun Club where this old PD shooter had his first try at hitting a 3' steel at 500yds. I found out that this rifle and stock combo was capable of repeatably hitting the 3' plate and also tracked exceptionally well. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Regards
RJ

I have Savage target actions in both Dogtracker and Long Range Sharpshooter stocks. They are a good stock and excellent value. The Dogtracker is a lower profile stock and the offset torque value is there but due to design it isn't as stiff in the forearm as the other stock, noticeably less so. IMO this won't affect accuracy but my son also has a DT and it bothers him that the flex is there.

FWIW, I had a Stockade on one of the actions, copy of the McMillan MBR and sold it........kept the Sharp Shooter Supply stock and ordered another to replace the Stockade.

Hey RJ,
These are web 'sites' not 'suites', OK? Could have been a typo, but you did it a couple of times in the same post.

Shepheard, here is another option for you. This is a RB/LP Savage target action, barrel is a 6x47 Lapua. Stock was cut by Joel Russo. If it is wood that you want Joel should be able to accomodate with most anything you want. I glued up the blank myself on this one and sent it to him. This rides the bags real nice and I like the thumb hole.

The gun below is not mine.. but I have one similar. It is a Mcree Precision stock and makes a great stock for the target action and requires no bedding. My stock is not a folder and I have two forends, one similar to the one pictured and one that is a flat 3' wide paddle that rides the bags great. Since it is all Alum, you can refinish it with ease, I duracoated mine.

If I get another Savage I will get a repeater and get his stock that allows use of mags.
