Savage Target Action extraction issue

Hoping someone can help me make sense of this. I have a 6mmBR that I built on a Savage Target action. After 1500+ rounds with no problems, it now seems that I have a problem with primary extraction. I haven't changed anything in a long time on this rifle, very early in its life I installed an extended bolt and a bolt lift kit.

This problem developed this season, and I am not sure what to do to cure it.

Do you lube the prim extract cam and bolt handle ?
You can measure the clearance or drill and tap the gas shield/ prim extraction collar to decrease the clearance and thereby increase timing of the primary extraction .
Do fired cases show any signs of chamber scratches that would make cases stick ?
The pieces , bolt handle , gas shield/prim extraction can easily be changed out .
Is your Bolt Assembly Screw tight ? Should of asked that first

After market bolts are not just drop in. They often require machining to achieve primary extraction. Measure the gap between the bolt handle and the rear bridge with the bolt handle in battery. The gap should be between .008'- .0014'. The bolt bodies are heat treaded and very hard, the machining requires carbide tooling.

I should clarify: I have an extended bolt handle, not bolt. To answer some questions: no signs at all of sticking cases, yes I lube, bolt assembly screw is tight. What has me really scratching my head is that I've run this rifle in F-Open hard and fast for a good while now, before this development.

Check out these easy fix options for the floating, cocking piece on the savage bolt. You can add primary extraction fairly easy with these DIY methods. Use a feeler gauge to get an idea of how much you need.

It may not be primary extraction at all, so before you start working to fix that check a few simple things first.
Extractor blade maybe a little worn or a little crud under it, take it out file a new edge on it or simply get a new one.
While you have it out put a 0.140 ball bearing under it(more tension) the original should be 0.125 or there about.
Warning, Warning when you do this do it inside a plastic bag or the spring, bearing and extractor will disappear, don't ask how many of us found this out.

Same brass? Might be time to run them through a small base die if you run them hot. Clean and polish the chamber too. Those are the first things I'd look at.

Did you just make a shim for it ? How did you bond it ?
Thanks Robert

I did not modify my personal rifle. Those are just some examples of how you can easily take care of the problem that some Savage rifles exhibit. You can look over on the Savage shooters forum for more details. IMO, Since there is no rotation force applied to the area where the shim is located, I would think any industrial adhesive should suffice. The use of a feeler gauge between the cam piece and action would accurately determine the amount needed to improve the situation.

Thanks, but chamber is clean (clean that every time I do the barrel) and the brass fits well. Not a sticky bolt lift issue, this is a problem starting the bolt back out

Starting to sound like the extractor slide is worn and/or the extractor spring is weak. I would replace both with new and see if better. the problem description is a little vague.

This sounds exactly like the problem I had with two Remington's. I would heed all the advice here and start with the simple extractor solution first but keep an open mind. My 700's only had the very last bit of primary extraction from the bolt handle/ receiver cam and it did not last long at all. Once the edges rounded off on the bolt handle cam angle, both rifles lost primary extraction and would need the bolt wiggled or jarred to remove the spent cases. I placed a small piece of copper shim (.040 thick)between the ramps and the bolt was smooth and extraction was perfect. This is just the modern expectation of quality from our numbers matter firearm manufactures these days. Unless its a custom action. We are getting what we pay for...

P.S. Yes I lube cam surfaces and lugs.

Have seen after market bolt handles that were not heat treated correctly. The cam surface wore down causing primary extraction problem. Try a feeler gauge between receiver & baffle when extracting fired case to see if it is PE problem.
