Savage Target Action, any extra needed?

Hi,

I'm planning a tax-refund build and will be going with a Savage target action, 6BR barrel of either Shilen or Krieger. I love doing everything myself whenever possible, and I'm wondering if there is any extra special work that should be done. I know the 700 actions are usually trued up when rebarreled, but is this necessary on the Savage, or can I get a drop in barrel, headspace it, drop it in a good stock w/bedding and shoot? Just wondering what people are doing to these actions to make them "the best they can be".

Thanks, love this forum, always get quick answers, not just filler comments. Always nice to have people reasons for their opinions instead of just the opinions!

I'm with Ron. I have a 6BR LRPV, and added a Douglas 20 tac barrel, shoots great. You can get them from Douglas. Kevn Rayhill is great on Savage.

Come on over to www.savageshooters.com you will find information on what people have done and are doing with the target actions.

Great action, I had a very easy time brarreling it with a go/nogo gauge. Found it easy to find .3" loads for the 6br.

Couple things I have not been able to do with my target action.
1. It will not realiably eject the brass. I tried all the recommended tricks, but still not 100%. It's kinda getting annoying.
2. The accutrigger was nice, but it kept losing the setting and would keep locking up. I did not have it at the lightest setting either, but after a hundred rounds or so it would get real light and start locking up.
Could have solved it with some blue locktight, but I decided to get an aftermarket trigger.

For the price I paid for the build; it is a wonderful tackdriver!

Just wondering where your shooting at? We have very limited yardages
here on Maui. And am looking for some private property to shoot on.

Aloha, Les

Hey Les,
I am out on Oahu. We have very limited yardage here too. The only public range out here has only an easily accessible 100yards.
I also shoot F-class with Puuloa Rifle and Pistol club, this range is only out to 600, but hopefully 1k may open up soon.
Sorry, don't want to jack this thread, so give me a pm if you have any questions. ;D

Mitch,
One more thing on the topic of target actions, I also had SSS true and time the action. I have had no experience with a factory, but those who have say that the action is much smoother than stock.
However, I did have some issues with SSS. PM me If you need more info on this.

Thanks. ;)

I have Savage PTA that I bought from a fellow forum member together with Ken Farrel scope mount. The action oozes quality and I think it is a bargain even at list price. I am planning 6-6.5x47 lapua 20-22" long varmint contour, probably McGowen. I have McGowen sprorter in 6.5x47L on Stevens 200 action and you wont believe how it shoots (it has SSS trigger and devcon bedding+pillars for the full disclosure). They have prefit barrels for $265. I love accutrigger in general and the one on PTA feels awesome.
