Savage target action advice

I am looking to build a 6mm of some sort ( br, brdx, dasher). My question is is a dual port savage target action that has been timed and trued worth looking into for IBS 1000 yard shoots or should I just save twice the money and get a custom action such as ( bat, kelby, Borden). Just looking to see if anyone has had experience with SSS and timed savage target actions and how smooth they are vs stiff cocking ramp like normal. Thanks in advance

My Savage PTA has been timed and trued and has the Evolution trigger all done by SSS. It is vastly better than it was prior to the work. That said it is no where near as smooth as my shooting buddies Borden action.

As you think about the Savage Dual port Target Action, think about a stock for it at the same time. The dual port uses an odd ball spacing making stocks more expensive and difficult to find. I went with a RBRP PTA for two reasons 1-thats what works best for my hand coordination and 2- Stocks for the 4.4 spacing are much easier to find. I'm no expert and don't want to come across as one but for the money I'm very pleased with my Target Action.

The target action will shoot as good as any made .
You the barrel and the load it what makes a bullet shoot .
IBS is another game . There not only do you need good shooting gun you need to be able to shoot as fast as possible . By that time you will Know Larry

Larry I know you love Savage. It is obvious by your name. I have never seen a Savage win a 1000 yard BR event. That is 16 years of competition. The Dasher and BR family are hard to get to eject. If you get a Bat you need to get the Sako type extractor. If you get a Panda, get the static ejector. You are way farther ahead to get a custom. Like all the guys above have said. Matt

Matt my bolts work as good as my customs . I also don't know of a br range closer then 500 miles . So we just shoot small time paper or 8" gongs at 1000 and 1018 yards
Savage has won more than any other .
Gong shooting not only do you need a good shooting gun you must be a good shooter
The time difference between pratice and your last shot is normally 1 1/2 . We never have had a perfect score . At 600 I have small on paper and have hit the 4 3/4 straight
I would like to see a br target shot in that format then have someone tell me the action . Larry

I have 2 savage target actions. One done by SSS and one by Kevin Rayhill. Both very smooth and accurate. After reading so many posts about how customs are so much better, I bought a BAT. The pta's are just as smooth and bolt lift is about the same. The PTA's are a bit sloppy compared to the BAT but on paper I see no difference.

The savage pta does seem like a good budget action. I have a rbrp already and dual port would work so much better for benchrest for me. Was not aware the spacing on dual port was different. Which factory stock comes with dual port action in target series?

PTA is called precision target action . It was offered in a special target guns and it was sold as a action . The guns sold for the price of a custom action. The action was made with modules of parts . The part were built with factory specifications . They never have been a custom action . Do they shoot as accurate yes . But anyone who shoots knows the barrel is what gives you accuracy .
If it wasn't you would see every shooter buying new actions . Larry

I agree. Just weighing out options for build. I'll need to do some research on ejection fix for br cartridges if there is one bc that would definitely lean me towards a custom action

The bolt has a spring and a plunger the same as all actions . I remove mine because I don't want mine to eject . So don't worry about ejection it is a simple fix . Larry

The key with getting a br to eject is to have the ejection angle high enough to keep the case out of the lug raceway. A sako or mini16 works well. A Savage has a sliding plate extractor. It will be extremely difficult to get it to work reliably with a br case.
How hi do you want it the new dasher brass works fine ?. Larry

I have 3 dual port Savages; 2 have 4.4 spacing and the other has the shorter 3.?? (can't remember the numbers offhand). I believe the BR model is the one now with the dual port action. If you go with the Savage action and a BR case, just take out the ejector and flip the empties out with the finger; leaving the ejector in place WILL cause the empty case to fall off the bolt face and be difficult to quickly remove.

I guess you've never seen a Panda with a TG ejector. It has no spring, so that it won't put off-center pressure on the case.

Maybe he wants the dual port with ejector so that he can run a condition. If you have to pick out every case by hand, what's the point of a dual port, anyway?

That why I don't have one. When I ordered my bolt I had the ejection hole eliminated .
