Savage Stocks

I have a Savage 12FV that now boasts a Shilen .223 AI barrel. It will shoot two good groups and then go south. I am suspecting the Tupperware Stock. I was looking at Boyds stocks. They only list two with a barrel channel at what they refer as a point "B" larger than the 1" barrel that I have. I do not understand the cut out on the stock bottom behind the pistol grip. What is the purpose of that? Not sure if I want a thumb hole stock.

I want a wood stock that I can bed myself. Any input of solutions to my problem or other stock manufacturers?

No. BUT, I'm looking for a Boyd's thumbhole varminter as well for that same gun and seems I couldn't find one. Only showed long action stocks and only two choices for different bolt release location options. What model number is that stock ?

Has anyone considered opening up the barrel channel yourself?
I installed a Shilen varmit barrel on a factory stock with some 60 grit sand paper and a deep well socket.

Just re-read sorry you were asking about a wood stock. The only laminate stock from savage I liked was the bvss. They pop up all the time in the classifieds too!

I put a Boyd's stock on mine.. Model 12fv... Put a bull criterion on it which is an inch or so.. Bedded it ... Worked great.. I didn't seem to have any issues finding the right stock on there website.. Only difference is I was looking for thumb hole

I shoot left handed, so every Boyds stock I've bought I had to modify the barrel channel. I use a foot long piece of pvc pipe wrapped with sandpaper to do the job. Takes about half an hour to do it. Then I seal the barrel channel with wood sealer.

Next time you need to open up a stock.. Try a large washer. Hold it 90.Deg. a pull Saves a ton of time.. Finish with your 60 grit.. Tommy Mc
