savage stock questions

Looking to replace the stock on an earlier model 10 tactical large shank S/A. Right now I'm looking at a used BVSS and a VLP but not sure wich one would be a better all around pick. Wanting to mostly use for range/bench rest and occasionaly varmint hunting. I read somewhere that the BVSS is more of a prone style but I could't tell you what makes a stock ideal for differen't styles of shooting. Action is a LH/ RH shooter

The VLP is a slightly modified version of the old Winchester Marksman stock design. It has a wider forend than the BVSS and the forend is not as deep (top to bottom), more rounded on the bottom. and is also a little shorter than the BVSS. The BVSS has very pronounced palm swells on both sides whereas the VLP has none. I find the wider and shallower forend on the VLP works better on the bags and while I have both, I prefer the VLP for varmint shooting (PD's), as I shoot off a mechanical front rest on a bench. The VLP also has more wood on the sides of the barrel channel in case you need to open it up. The Win. Marksman stock is also the one H-S copied to make the varmint stock for Savage, which I like very much and have on several varmint rifles. The Marksman stock is a great multi purpose stock style.

thanks SBS for the great explanation, do you know off hand if they came in a 4.27 bolt spacing? I have an email into the supplier but haven't heard back yet

Yes, they came out in the 4.27 spacing. I have a couple of them on actions with this spacing.
