Savage Stevens 200 in .223 remington

I just got rid of a m-48 yugo for a Savage stevens 200 in .223
remington..... And we were kicking around about rechambering
to a larger short action cartridge... whada think? What
cartridge guys? 220 swift? 22-250? What's the max reaming
the gun will take?

The Stevens 200 is a Savage without the Accu-Trigger. A good platform for a build. Swap the barrel and bolt head and you can make it just about any caliber you want. Add a Rifle Basix trigger and a single shot follower and you're good to go! The ssf will take care of any feeding problems.Mike.

Is it true that 220 swift burns out barrels? I read somewhere
that powders have been improved over the years.

Also what how far can a 220 reach and still have the energy
to splatter?

milboltnut,
I have just finished reading "A varmint hunter's odyssey",great read by the way), and the author used his .220 with regularity out to 6 and 700 yards on ground hogs. I heard the same thing about barrel burning, and from what I can gather pretty much any round larger than a .223Rem with a .224cal bullet is going to burn barrels,i.e. 22-250,22/6mm, .220swift, 22br,though not too bad), .22/243 etc...). IMHO it would be a great dedicated longish range groundhog gun with an expected life in the area of 2,000 rounds.

Mike,
Thanks for the info. Wow that's pretty far for a .22
caliber. Pretty big cartridge, comparable to the length of a
8x57 case. Guess it's the restriction of the small diameter of the throat and barrel that causes the erosion.
