Savage smooth barrel nut

I've never taken one out of the stock, but from what I understand is that underneath there is a hole in the nut for a spanner wrench. If I'm wrong someone will correct me, and it will not be the first time. :D The slotted nut is most common and easier to deal with.

Most people take them off with a pipewrench without marring the barrel. Then they replace it with the slotted nut, just makes life easier in the Savage world for those that change barrels periodically.

Have done a few. No hole on any of them. Make a clamping wrench from a piece of 6061. I used a piece of flat stock 2" X 1/2" X 6 or 7 inches long. Bore a hole 1.350" to slip over the nut, cut a slit, and put a 1/4-20 screw in the slit to clamp it. Hold the action or barrel in a proper vise, clamp the fabbed wrench on the nut, and smack it.

sss makes a wrench as well but it is hard to get through to them at times.I think brownells sells some of their products.

I recently bought a Wheeler Eng. nut wrench directly from them. In the box was the standard nut wrench and a smooth clamping wrench with brass shims.

Replacing it with a slotted one seems like the best and easiest thing to do. Although, the wrench and a set screw seems like a good idea. Could drill a small divit in the nut for the set screw to go in. Think I will try that first. Thanks for all the input.

STOP!

No need to drill anything. I'll try and post a picture of the wrench later.

drilling and installing a set screw is just going to damage the barrel threads.

Ive removed all mine with a pipe wrench and replaced them with the standard slotted nut. Actually, the wrench barely damaged the smooth nut.

The best option if you want to re-use the smooth nut is to order the correct nut from SSS. I wasnt aware that Wheeler started making one but if they do that would be a good option as well, and probably easier to order.

I was 1/2 right. ; :D

When I did it, I put the barrel in a barrel vice and used an action wrench to unscrew the action away from the smooth nut. It was very easy this way. A splined replacement nut was ordered with the new barrel.
