Savage shooters-I need a front bag

I have a Savage F-class stock and I need a good front bag to use. I have a Shadetree top on a Caldwell base but the front bag that I am currently using doesnt "hold" the stock enough for my .284s recoil.

I was just wondering what you guys were using to shoot your stock F-class stocks.

I have a .284 on the same Savage factory stock. I am using the Edgewood Common bag with reinforced bottom. It has worked very well for me. The best thing to do is get a block of wood cut out just like the Savage stock and when the rest is not in use, place it in the front bag and crank it down. Kind of like breaking in an old ball glove. Good Luck!

One of the biggest problems with the Sav F-Class stock is the height of the forearm not so much the bags fault.
Raising the center of gravity that high allows all sorts of torque to wreak havoc on the gun and bag setup.

This is the only stock I know that addresses that issue fully and is inlet for the Sav action.

I found one used on this sight and it really tamed the gun. No more bucking around.
If your interested try to find a used one.
Reportedly trying to buy a new one can lead to very long wait times and frustration. Just what I've seen on the web, maybe things have improved.

Is the bag gripping the gun tightly legal in F-Class?

Per the NRA Rules:

(3) A front rest may be employed for either the rifle’s forend or for the forward hand. If attached, clamped,
or held to the rifle, the front rest must be included in the rifle’s overall weight (Rule 3.4(a)).

We have a front bag rule in point blank that roughly translated goes like this.
"The gun must be able to easily be raised from the bag vertically with no adjustment to the bag".

A little gray area perhaps. Who defines easy?

Very long wait times and frustration was me giving SSS the benefit of the doubt.
I did business with SSS just once. A T&T and Evo trigger. All went well and I had it back in 4 weeks.
Sorry to hear of your plight. Mostly for you and customers like you but I have a little extra sorrow for SSS.
Thats no way to run a business. Sounds like a business model from the old communist Russia.

SSS has been having these issues for years now and delivery of stocks is the biggest, but not only complaint.
Supposedly its thier out of country vendor that cannot keep up with supply by any stretch of the imagination.
Blaming the vendor isn't a cure. Time for SSS to find a new one amongst other things.

Its an awesome stock and well worth the money in IMO.
The wait on the other hand is not something I think I would handle well, Good Luck.

Thanks for all the replies. I am not really interested in getting a new stock for this rifle. I have a nice stock that if I am shooting in a match, I would place this barreled action into to shoot the match. I shoot more midrange competitions, so my MR barreled action (Sav dual port in 6.5x47) is currently in the stock. If shooting a LR match, I would place that action in that stock.

I wanted to have a good front bag, so I may not need to change stocks. I guess I could always order a custom front bag made for the specific width of the forearm of the stock (2.8"). Edgewood will make those bags for an extra cost.

Any other thoughts?

Lots of folks simply add some shims behind the side bag tensioners to get more grip.
Not sure if that helps.


Not sure about accuracy requirements for you LR guys.
You'll have to search far and wide to find a short ranger considering swapping actions between stocks.
First off of course, not many Savages in the game although they do have some capabilities.
No two actions are the same and stocks are predominantly bedded for each specific action.
You can try it, maybe you'll get lucky.
Personally I'd just swap the barrel back and forth. The beauty of that is it leaves you with an action requiring a barrel
No better reason to get another barrel than that. ;D
