Savage Receiver Mount?

Longtrain

Gold $$ Contributor
I have a Savage Model 10 action and am building a Palma rifle based on this action. I'm sure there are better actions, but I already have a suitable stock and this is bought and paid for... I would like to mount a base to the side of the action to accept a redfield mount aperture sight. I do not want to mount to a scope rail as my head position will be too high for comfort. I tried a Lipski, but the correct height does not allow me to have full range of adjustment on my sights. I found this on Champion Shooters, which looks good but is only for Mod 70 or 40X actions.

Any advice is appreciated.

Being a true blue barrel nut fan (Savage) I just had to respond. I really don't think you can get a "better" action than what you have already without spending a LOT more money on it. Spend the money on a top quality barrel and maybe a better trigger, though with some minor tuning the Accutriggers can be extremely nice in my view.

I know they are looked down on by many, but that is all I shoot anymore. From 17 Rem up to 338 Lapua. Fast lock time, floating bolt head, quick change barrels, easy to change from 223 bolt head to 308, to 300 Mag. The only negative for me is that they seem kind of ugly....

As for fitting that sight mounting block to the action, I don't see why it wouldn't work well. If the contour isn't an exact match for the radius of the action you could always glass bed it for a perfect fit. All it is going to cost you is the price of drilling and tapping some holes and opening up the stock to accept it. You will want to make sure that the mount is perfectly aligned so that your rear sight will be centered and square to the bore.

I would call Savage. They sell a Palma rifle, and I suspect they have a Redfield-style base for that. Worst-case, you'd need to drill and tap some new holes in your receiver.
