Savage re barrel ?

I have a model 10fcp with mcmill stock. I was thinking of having a Krieger MTU barrel put on it. The diamiter at the breach side is 1.250 and finishes out at .930 at 26". It looks like it will fit with some stock channel work. Is this diamiter too big for the action? I believe the barrel nut will have to go and that's ok. Is there enough meat in the action to hold this barrel? The barrel now measures 1.037 in front of the nut. What's the bigest barrel you guys have put on your Savages?

Shepheard,
What was the original caliber for the 10fcp,I assume this is a short action and most likely a small shank)? The small shank savages are around 1.060", and the large are about 1.120.
You can always have a smith turn it down to fit the action, but you may not be able to use the barrel nut.
I don't think you'll have a problem with rigidity.
Good luck,
Mike

I have two 'no nut' Savage projects...both s/shots in 6BR & 260 AI...bbl diameter is 1.230" x 26"...no taper...straight cylinder..19# assembled w/glass...my other 'nutted' Savage projects are also no taper tubes...but use the nut...both small shank 1.055" & large shank 1.120"...they weigh 15# w/glass..I'd suggest a drop in Savage replacement using the nut...I use Pac Nor..but there are many now to choose from w/o the 8 week build wait..with the proper tools its easy to do the barrel switch yourself..

Thanks much for the replys. This is a short action 308. I figured a diamiter of 1.250 threaded down to 1.055 might be a weak link? When I get closer to doing the build I will have to bring these thoughts up to a smith. Sharo Shooter Supply is top on my list to do the work. Too bad there aren't more Savage specialist out there as I think he probably has a good sized waiting list.

The savage tenon is actually a bit LARGE then the Rem700 so you have no worries about its ability to handle a 308 or any other cartridge.

If you already have a large diameter barrel blank, just install like a Rem,shoulder headspace). Works just fine but you will likely have to do a bit of stock work to make it fit.

Or you can go with a nut install and look like factory. Any smith will be able to turn down the barrel.

Or you can get a Shilen Select match prefit barrel and do it yourself.

Not exactly a question for this thread, but still somewhat related: Would any of you out there know whether my .204 LRPV will take a .308 case? I've pretty much shot my current barrel out and would like to convert it to .308. I can switch bolt heads and obviously find a decent prefit barrel, but will the ejection port take the .308 case? Is there anything else I'm forgetting besides a barrel wrench and headspace gauges?
