Savage prefit 1 in 8 prefit barrel question

Hi, I have a prefit Shilen barrel in 6mm br. My question is I can't reach the lands with 105 vld's or 105 Amax. Seems they fall out of the case before hitting the lands. Is this normal or am I not doing something incorrectly? I think a jam in the lands means bullet is touching the lands correct? The rifle is head spaced with gauges and will shot .5 in groups at 100 yards with a variety of bullets. I am happy with the barrel but I am curious about the freebore? Please comment.
Thanks,
Oldhoward

Hi, I found the problem with help of reading the forum. I was using a Stoney Point gauge and 6mbr Hornady oal seating casing. Well the case supplied wasn't quite the correct dimension and was not seating in the chamber properly. A full length resize and some neck reaming of the case fixed the problem. I can now touch the lands with the 105 easily.
Thanks forum members!

It's a common problem for the Stoney-Point system even with standard but minimum tolerance SAAMI chambers. I've had it happen with two rifles chambered for different cartridges to date.

I just split the neck on a case that fits the chamber, seat the bullet long and chamber. Carefully remove and measure OAL. Repeat until you get consistent OAL readings. This may not be optimum, but it is cheap and fast check of COAL and also a way to monitor throat erosion if you keep the exact same bullet with the split neck case.

th Stoney point has thrown me a curve more than once. it is a good starting point but needs to be checked with a bullet loaded in a case and checked for marks on a bullet.

Also had problems with the Stoney Point Cases not being to spec. Very under sized and not getting proper case to chamber fit.

My method and one that works great for others is a fire-formed empty case with bullet seated with the bullet colored with black magic marker.

Chamber fire-formed empty case with bullet seated, close bolt eject case and look for marks and measure.

Just make sure you got the right neck tension so you can get an accurate measurement and bullet don't stick in lands.

So when you look for marks on the bullet, do you measure the marks to find how jammed you got them? I have heard of people doing this but people never fully explained how they did it.
