Savage pre-threaded barrels

Switchbarrel

I've tried to be a good first time poster and checked the archives first but, didn't see what I was looking for.

Does anyone doing the Savage pre-threaded barrels offer an improved version of the 6 BR? I've checked a few websites and only found the standard BR's listed. Thanks for any help provided.

PAC NOR can make pre fit barrel in any caliber as soon as they already have the reamer or if you agree to pay an overcost for tooling or perhaps if you purchase / send them your reamer

good shooting

I'm hoping to find someplace that has a reamer already as I do not have one and am trying to avoid the additional cost of renting or purchasing one. Trying to keep my inexpensive project...inexpensive. Thanks.

I was in the same boat as you. The 6BRX particularly had me interested but no one had the reamer for it. I just ended up getting a no-turn 6BR from Pac-Nor. No buying reamers, forming brass, expensive dies for 100 or so fps.

Pac-Nor is one of the ones I was looking at. What contour, length, twist, etc. did you get? Have you shot it yet, if so, how are the results? In a perfect world, I was hoping to get a SS 28" straight taper, 8 twist, std. neck 6 dasher for a new SS short action I just ordered. If I can't find what I want, I'll probably pull the 22-.250 barrel from my long action Savage, grey stock) and put it on the short action, then get a 6.5X.284 for the long action. The two Nesika Bays at the top are 6.5X.284 Shehanes. I want to build something cheaply for 600 yard matches just to satisfy my own curiosity.

I ordered a large shank 28", no taper, 8 twist SS SM. It's not here yet and my actions are off getting trued yet. I'll keep you posted but it'll be a few weeks before I get it shooting.

Great set of toys. Could you tell me which stock/action is the tan one? and what contour is the barrel?
Thanks, shcal

If you're talking about the third rifle from the top. It's actually grey but probably looks a little tan from the yellow lighting in my house. Anyway, that one's a factory Savage long action, 26" fluted varmint barrel .22-250. It's in a Stockade Long Range benchrest stock, has a Sharpshooter trigger, Nightforce tapered bases and a Burris Black Diamond 8-32X MD scope. I just put the Sharpshooter Tactical bolt knob on it and really like that it sticks out past the side of the stock a little further. The incredible accuracy of this thing is what gave me the bug to try this new 6 BR project.

switchbarrel: I have the same stock on my savage actioned 22-250 AI. I like the stock but have thought about changing to a switchbarrel 6BR. The 6BR appeals to me because of the more efficient case with less powder and the larger variety of bullets in the 6mm family. I shoot primarily varmints. I would like to put a heavy varmint barrel on it but I don't know if the stock can be opened to take the heavy contour barrel. Do you have any experience with this stock and a heavy contour barrel?

Hi Shcal-

I don't have any experience, yet) other than my factory heavy barrel in my stock. The sides of the stock at the top of the forearm are pretty thick and look like they would still have plenty of material if you were to open up the barrel channel to take a straight, no taper, heavy varmint barrel. The outside of my stock is 1 and 15/16" wide at the top of the forend, the barrel channel opening is about 1" at the forend. The stock could easily be opened up to allow a 1.055" barrel to free float without a problem. You could always give Kevin Rayhill a call to find out if opening up the barrel channel will remove too much material and adversely affect stiffness.

Whatever caliber I end up with, this is probably the stock and barrel contour I will use for my project.

Hi Switchbarrel: Thanks for the reply. Sounds like you and I have similar thoughts on using this stock and action for a long heavy barrel 6BR project. Let's keep in touch as our projects progress.

I did a prechambered 8 twist SS 6 BR with a no neck turn chamber for Lapua brass and a .117 freebore. That is for the 107 SMK, and I can shoot everything down to a 58 Vmax well. I have just over an inch at the 28" muzzle. Shoots like a dream. Needs a better stock, opened up the BV stock to fit the new barrel.
