Savage model 12FV, 6.5 creedmoor

Ok, I have a chance to purchase a used Savage 12FV, 6.5 Creedmoor, Nikon P-308 BDC scope. We took this gun in on trade at the shop I work at. Gun manufactured in 2017, bull barrel w/target crown. Has plastic stock and is in like new condition. The person that traded it in told me he wanted a different shooting platform, Savage model 10 stealth.

I am looking for a 6.5 Creedmoor and have been looking at the Bergara B14, MHR and the Savage 10 stealth. I can purchase this gun for about $250.00 less than the Bergara and model 10 would cost me.

I want to get into long range shooing 600 yds. I am not going to be competing in competition just having fun. I have been looking at the Boyds AT-0ne stock for $180.00 to replace the synthetic stock.

Anyone have the model 12FV savage?

Looking for some recommendations.

I have shot a 12fv and it was nice. On another forum there are several guys that I know that claim they are very accurate. Starting out I would jump on one without thinking. I'm shooting a bergara and I think the gun is more accurate then my reloading allows. Not sure what your background is with shooting but I am still a newb. If I could do it again I'd have saved the money and got a savage 12fv

Thanks for the info.

I have been reloading for over 40 years now and I have not purchased a factory box of ammo in years. I built a AR10 in 308 Win and thought I could shoot past 300 yds. Boy was I wrong. Thought about re-barreling it in 6.5 CR but ended up selling it to a guy that wanted it for hog hunting.
Been looking at trying long range shooting (600 yds), thought I could use my Rem 700, 7mm mag. Very accurate gun just kicks like a mule.

Was looking at Begera B14 HMR and savage 10 Stealth. Since i work at a gun shop I can get employee discounts direct from the factories. The Bergara has a 4-6 month wait for the 6.5 CR. Savage out the door price is around $800.00.

Then I remembered this Savage 12FV we took in trade. With a Nikon P-308 BDC scope my cost is under $500.

Figured I could sell the scope since I have a Vortex PST II, 5-25X50, FFP sitting in a box under the bench.

The money I would save will get me reloading dies and brass.

You know the more I think about it I just might jump on it...;)

Hope to get more opinions.

You might get a 12fv cheaper at cabelas as the guy mention on the other thread, 300 dollars. I doubt you will get some one pop up here or any forum and talk you out of a savage FV if you're looking for low cost performance. You're paying a good deal more for the out the box prs looking guns and with the ruger there is much more mixed reviews. I've seen the savage precision shoot at a local fclass rec match and wasn't too impressed compared to the savage br in 6mmbr next to it. The br was silent as a bird and put the shots on the paper even better.

On sale and with rebate you can walk out Cabela's doors with a brand new fv12 for around $225-250. Usually on sale w/rebate spring & fall,

This is a good way to go. Toss the factory stock and bed a Boyd's for less than 200 bucks. Shoot with the factory barrel if you're on a budget, but if you have some spare change, sell the factory barrel BEFORE you shoot it and screw on a Shilen or similar high quality target barrel for 500 bucks or less. That's what I did and made myself a great F-Open class gun for not much money.

Good advice....just wanted to add that Criterion (Krieger) makes great pre-fits for Savage target rifles and are available in Dasher as well as the basic BR.

I bought a 12fv in .223. My bullets went into the target sideways. Factory 55 grain. I sent it back to Savage twice and they said to use a heavier bullet. I sold the barrel and bought a Shilen pre chambered and it shot great. So, I buy Savage rifles on sale at Cabela's and just use the action. I also put Boyd's stocks on them.

My FV12 in 223 shoots 55g handloads sub moa day in day out, did about MOA with factory ammo. Most are shooters, but there are a few out there that are not.

Doesn't sound like a sensible answer from Savage as a fast twist would handle the 55's well.

Steve, I agree. Funny thing is that I saw an interview at the Shot Show with Jack Krieger. He stated that in his opinion, Savage had the best factory barrel.

I did at the Black Friday sale last year, but with the buyout of Cabelas by Bass Pro, I think that ship has sailed for the last time. I doubt we'll ever see a good sale combined with a factory rebate again. All 2016 pre-election stock build up has probably been sold by now.

It was fun while it lasted!

This is possible, I've been thinking the same. I'm keeping a look out for the sale/rebate deal. If it happens I'm in on a couple of them.

Even the $420 (?) everyday price is not all that bad, as I've seen just the actions for $300 + depending on who and what action they have. $250 is always better, but life is not always fair.

Well, for all the Nay sayers about a used Savage 12fv, 6.5 CM. On saturday a fellow worker asked me if I was going to the long range qualification class at our club. I totally forgot about it. after work I mounted the PST II, 5-25X5- FFP on the savage, went to a local 100 yd range, got it zeroed for 100 yds, came back home reloaded 50 rounds of 140 gr, Hornady Match. Next morning I was on the 600 yd range. Had to hit 12 x 12" steel at 350, 400, 450, 500, 550, and 600 yds using only 10 rounds per target.

Well it was a challenge because I have only shot this used gun 3 times and only on 100 yd ranges. The stock just didn't fit me, cheek pad too low, butt pad just not right.

BUT I DID IT:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Not bad for a 70 year old guy with high blood pressure and a $300.00 gun.

Not bad for a 30 year old guy with normal blood pressure and a $1000 gun. Way to go "old man".

Thanks guys.

I was shaking after the 600 yd shot.

Had 3 spotters telling me where my shot was. Some high and some didn't see it.

I was using the MOA hash marks on the scope for MOA correction.

Also didn't help that we had a 15 MPH wind swrilling the flags at 600.

The 12FV went on sale 2-3 times a year at Cabela's for past several years. I've been watching for it to be advertised at the $319 since last fall because I have two friends that want them. No dice. I think Bass Pro Shops may have put the nix on that price. I believe it dropped to $359 once around winter time but no rebate from Savage. Normal price $419.
