Savage Model 12 LH VLP

I am kinda wanting a lefty Savage M12 VLP. I can't find anything used online so I am trying to consider my options.

1. I can buy a right hander and have it converted to lefty but then I will also have to buy a new stock. In the end I will likely be $1500 +- into the gun.
2. I can buy a blueprinted Remington and build the exact gun I want for around 1500+
3. I can keep looking online and try to find a used VLP.

Any suggestions from the forum on the best option? I am thinking if I am dropping 1500 I might as well build the gun using a Remington. I really had hoped I would find a used M12 VLP LH online but so far its a no go. Should I consider a custom action in lieu of the Remington if I decide to build?

Check with the fellow who sells the Criterion barrels. Too early in the morning to remember the name of the company, but someone younger will. I bought a left hand stock from him a few years ago and he sells Savage receivers.

Converting a R to L means replacing the stock, receiver, bolt head, bolt body, bolt handle etc. Not practical.

Didn't state any requirements for mag type, bolt face etc.

VLP lefty is going to be hard to find. Better chance of finding the SS action 12/16 with the tupperware stock, I believe it was FLVSS. FLV is the lefty blued steel model.

You could start with this.

Here is a BLVSS, similar to the VLP but stock is a little different.

Both the BVSS and VLP have been available in various years with either single shot or repeaters. FLV was always a repeater. In years past the -S on the end of the model indicates single shot, BVSS-S or VSS-S, however not always true on leftys.

I just picked up that FLHVSS Savage Custom Shop gun. I have been wanting a Savage so I could swap barrels. With the .204 I figure I can go .223 or 20 Vartag as well at a later date.

Now that I have it on the way should I eventually go with a .223 Wylde chamber or 5.56? I'll prob add the .223 first as I want something I can readily load or get ammo for.

Depends what you want to do, varminting, heavy bullets etc.

Lots of possibilities on the .378 bolt face. 223 based 20's, 17's, 6-204, 6x45 and 6x45AI or 6TCU, 223 etc.

I guess what I really need to know is in terms of .223 which chamber option is best? Do I go standard .223, 5.56, or .223 Wylde? Is there any negatives in terms of hand loading with either choice? Most barrel manufacturers offer all these as choices and I know each will work but I don't know which is best.

What type of shooting are you going to want to do the most of? This will dictate bullet choice, twist rate, and chamber.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I had no idea about the custom shop.

That's Savage Customer Service number for special orders. The Coordinator is/was Effie Sullivan
My info is a couple of years old but at the time she was the High Priestess of Savage custom orders.

It will be another prairie dog gun. Using the accurate shooter article on .223 I figured the "do it all" 9 twist would accomplish what I want.

9 twist will fling 'em. If you want to try the heavier bullets a 9 twist will handle do the Wylde. 223 SAAMI has a short freebore and steeper leade angle.
