Savage Model 12 F/TR .223 Opinions

I've been shooting a Predator Pursuit in F/TR. All of our matches are mid-range and I can't see myself starting to travel to find 1000 yard ranges. I have been looking at the Savage Model 12 F/TR in .223 to possibly get a leg up on the AR. Also been using a Leupold 16X40 MK4 which I need to upgrade. I'm pretty much set on sticking with .223 vs. .308.

A custom rifle is a little beyond my means at this point.

Kind regards and thanks in advance for your thoughts.

That Savage will perform far better than your AR. Even though I use all Remington clones, I think that rifle is a great value and they built it right by using a 30" 7-twist barrel.

I think the savage is great rifle for the DIY guy who does not want to go full custom for whatever reason. You can add a Shillen prefit in the future if the factory tube is not performing as you like, swap to a new caliber if you want.

With the REM-age barrel any REM700 can be swapped out just like a savage. And your stock options are a bit larger there is a Mcree stock in the classified right now that will make a great f-tr stock. And your trigger selection will be alot better too

You can get a used Rem 700 cheap, buy a good barrel, Find a good gunsmith and buy a stock. And you have a custom rifle!!

+1, I like this idea. The trigger hassle is enough to sway my decision. Ive seen enough people at matches having to reset the sear 2 or 3 time before it will stay cocked, I wouldn't want to deal with it.

And if you rebarrel a Remington you get to start with a premium barrel. Not to mention the ease of cleaning compared to a savage barrel.

Good Evening,

I love my Savage Model 12 F/TR. I did dump the Accutrigger for a Rifle Basix Savage 2. The last Mid range F/Class match she shot a 594/600 and won the F/TR Class running away. I only lost to the winner of the Open Division by 2 points. I think I'll keep her.

You probably already know the other cartridges will shoot inside the .308 or .223, so F/TR is something you must want to do.

That said, get the rifle and start shooting. The wind is the issue, not the brand of the rig.

Even though you will be keeping it to 600, so will the other shooters. You will know soon enough if you like the game enough to upgrade. The other guys will shoot inside you on the windy days, but if your point is to gain experience for the Service Rifle, your idea is good.

The Savage shooters have been a fairly competitive bunch since they showed up. Out of the box, you will be fine with their F/TR rig if you can hold the x-ring on a calm day. If it will hold that, jump into the game.

Just my opinion. First, you won't have any trouble detecting a leg up on your AR. Second, get the gun. It is a factory barrel so if you have trouble at first getting it to group, get some of Tubbs Final Finish bullets and FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS EXPLICITLY. It'll shoot. I know of one in .308 that shot so well afterwards that it gave the shooter as well as some custom owners pause.
Oh get a good bedding job too.

The Savage will be accurate.

The Rem 700 option can be accurate, but some people have a harder time finding good gunsmiths than others. It's nice to remove the gunsmith from the equation if you do not already have a good one.

find you a Savage and have fun shooting one of the most accurate rifles out of the box that money can buy. I did not buy one, but put one together. It is very capable of HM scores at 600 yards. I have shot the FTR rifles and they are sweet. Can't bring myself to buy another Remington, possibly ever....

I just built a custom F/TR rig for a hair over what a savage Palma rig costs, but used premium parts.

Yep Chappy I know. BUT! What Savage says they want for em online and what you can actually get them for is usually quite different.

Savage claims 1500 online for the F/TR but I payed a hair over 11 at my local store about a year ago. I probably had 1250 in it by the time I bought the Tubbs bullets and had it bedded but WHOA! did it ever go to shooting. I'd like to have a custom build too and I will probably get one when I learn how to shoot but for now I love my Savage

I have $925.00 in the one I pieced together, and that includes a 20 moa Farrell base. Model 12 s.s. bvss action, stockade stock, benchmark barrel. Bought the stock and barrel off of here. I topped it with my 12-42x56 n.f. b.r.

Nothing wrong with a Savage, but I had to have a stock with adjustable features (I'm tall and lengthy). And for only having about $2100 in for a full custom rig, I went that route instead of a Savage Palma rifle for F/TR.
