Savage model 12 Bench Rest Rifle in 6BR

Just picked one of this up. First off I could not chamber a new piece of brass. I tried Alpha nd Lapua. Neither one would chamber. Using a snake camera I saw large burrs on the end of the chamber. This match the deep scratches in both pieces of brass. Used very very very fine emery cloth and removed burrs. Chambers OK now. Also had debris and oil in the barrel. Cleaned it. Shot 3/8 100 yard groups. It is advertised that the trigger will go down to 5 OZ. Not a chance. I got it to 1.5 lbs. Just for the heck of it I removed the spring from the trigger. It was still 1.5 lbs. Send email to Savage, never got a reply. I have to say I am not impressed with their craftsmanship and quality control. There was no way a test round was fired before leaving the factory. FYI my load was 28.9gr Varget with a 107gr Sierra MK and a 7.5 Rem primer seated .010 off the lands.

I too have a Savage Model 12, only mine is the LRPV in .223. I have a little over 900 rounds through mine, has functioned flawlessly and easily shoots sub-MOA groups at 500 yards with rounds it likes. Not that Savage, or any company shouldn`t respond to e-mails, but I`ve found phone calls are usually more effective.

You should have called them before you ever fooled with the burr issue.
The trigger, I would say your on your own. I have several and am happy with them, after some tinkering.
I will catch some flack from this, rifle basic triggers is NOT the answer. Imho until you replace ALL of the trigger assembly you won’t be happy.

The trigger needs to be reenginered completely from the ground up. The one thing that no amount of money can fix in it's current configuration.

They've answered the phone and my questions when I've called in the past.

They're triggers aren't the cream of the crop but I've owned about 30 of them on rifles. Some are better than others and I know that. I have a brand new target trigger here I'm saving for just in case. It was given to me and that's the only reason I have it.

Timney does make a decent trigger for them. But I know that's not what the OP wants to hear seeing how it's a new rifle.

As far as not being fired at the factory, I doubt it with out some kind of proof.

What a coincidence! I just installed a Jard trigger in my Savage single shot target action yesterday.
Got the 7oz to 16oz trigger. Excellent trigger. Came set about 7 oz. Did have to remove material from the inside of stock to fit but not much. It is expensive. $200 plus.

Friend of mine bought the same rifle and when he got it I bore scoped it and told him to send it to Savage for another barrel because of the run out of the chamber compared to the bore, he had the same problem with very badly scratched brass also.
The barrel they replaced it with looked good when he got it back, shoots ok but not a custom barrel for sure.

As far as triggers, The factory trigger can be pretty darn good with some work and tinkering, plenty of info out there.
The JARD replaces all of the stamped sheet metal crap, as does the out of production SSS trigger.

I picked up a 6BR a couple of years back. It shoots really well, but it had “another” trigger in it. The only way to make it some what safe was to have the safety on when you closed the bolt. Even then when taking the safety off it was so inconsistent all but unusable. I and another fellow spent a fair amount of time on it with no luck. We came to the conclusion that the angles of the factory and after market parts were not compatible, we removed NO metal, prior owner maybe, or both parts from the factory were not right. The time spent/wasted, I was not doing anymore and end up with the same issues.
I got PO’d contacted JARD and replaced the whole mess. No it is not a Jewel. Is it very usable a d repeatable,Yes. I would not hesitate to order another if need be.

As far as the barrel issue, I don’t think Savage has any kind of accuracy guarantee. I do know the will work with you.
Don’t think barrel issues are exclusive to Savage. I have seen Remington, Winchester, Smith&Wesson and Weatherby have barrel issues.

My LRPV 6BR also had burr in the chamber--the bolt face was rough and marked new brass--I used the smooth end of a pin gauge the correct diameter and some fine lapping compound to fix the bolt face--should have just bought another--and I had an 8 twist with no free bore???--so I had to throat it
Now after all that bull it shoots wonderful--My Target Accutrigger is not happy below about 12 oz--below that it gets sketchy and pulls will be all over the place--above about 12-13 oz it works fine--it sure is no winner in trigger dept but does fine--My other Savage got a Rifle Basix--it took a few weeks to get it tuned--TINY adjustments at a time and use the heavier spring with it or you don't have a chance--the lighter Basix spring was just junk--the trigger could not be made safe or happy with it--I have that trigger around 1 lb and it is fine now but Man! It was a PIA to get right--Both triggers got better as round count increased from new
Even after all that I like my Savages they all shoot well with zero issues in the field--PD machines!

Would you do it all over again or use a Remington clone that has a plug and play good trigger?

Good question
So I did build one from a stock Rem 700 SA, an Urban barrel, Bell Carlson stock and a Timney trigger--I also used the DBM bottom metal with MDT 10 round mags all for 223 PD rifle--I did a nut barrel and built it at home I Love that rifle--it was so simple way better trigger etc It is a PD Hammer with 53 Vmax
But...I love my Savages--they have some quirks but after two of them and two factory 223 Remington varmint rifles--The Savages shot more accurate out of the box--by far no contest--all were 223 using factory high end and loads worked up for each--
I could let go my 223 BVSS but my LRPV 6BR? No way it is a great rifle with factory barrel and all
Glad to have experienced Both--Next Build? Oh yea a Remington style!
