Savage Mark II issue

Texas Solo

B.S. High Master
I got my grandson a bolt action .22.
Savage Mark II. Nice starter rifle.
Not sure what to think/do about a potential bolt issue.
The bolt is very hard to close. It moves in and out smoothly, but the handle is really hard to lower. It acts like a rifle with negitive headspace.
But given that a .22 is a rimmed case I doubt that's it. I put 2 rds. in the mag and they both feed, fired and ejected fine.
I hoping it will smooth up and wear in over time, but if there's actually something wrong, I want to know now.
Thoughts?

I'm not familiar with that action but it might be a cock on close design. Is it easy to open the bolt after firing?

Hi, on mine I oiled the bolt, greased the caming surfaces, and ran the bolt hundreds of times through the cold dark winter months. The action really slicked up nicely. E .

I have had mine little MkII for a long time. The bolt did slick up after use and is one of my favorite budget 22's but your hard bolt close seems odd. I do not recall that much when I had gotten mine.

Get him Boyds stock or maybe even the MDT Field stock for that little rifle and with a happy lot of ammo it should shoot pretty well.

One thing I did add to mine that seems to help is a rubber bolt handle ball for lack of better works. Can't recall the brand but drop in hot water, slip onto the handle knob and it gives me something more to use when running the bolt. A Voodoo is not but those are so cheap and fun and can shoot well.

Keep an eye on the Savage Mags. they tend to pop open where those flat little stamped steel pieces stick out of the mag side walls. I have several that run great and one that kept letting the next round pop up nose first and gave me a feed issue. Pliers can resolve those quick.
