Savage mark ii action

Going to build a custom bench rest gun 22lr. What is y'all's thoughts on the savage mark ii is it worth
the time and money to build?
I'm trying not to 1500 dollars right now for a gun to shoot in the ten pound class.
Any input is welcome thanks Thomas

Thanks for the info guys

tmoss,
Don't know what you intend to do with a rifle like that, but if you are SERIOUS about building a Benchgun, go find a USED Remington 40X action or complete rifle and build on that. A Savage MKII action is built on basically a $400 Rimfire rifle that will always be a $400 rifle when new. I'm not knocking Savage in the least when I say that either because I own some of those including a Savage a Target action Benchrest centerfire rifle that is way down on the list of far more superior actions. My Anschutz (which is a multi purpose rifle) runs circles around my Savages and others that I've competed against. A Savage MKII just isn't a Benchrest quality action for a serious Benchrest rifle. A Remington 40X is at least a very decent Rimfire action that competitors use and gives you a good chance of winning in competition. The financial aspect is , of course, a consideration. But may I suggest you think long and hard before spending money on something that may very well disappoint you in the end because of its inherent inferior qualities. Sorry to say, Savage MKII Rimfirea are NOT precision quality actions. Just my thoughts.

The Savage Mark II is a great action for varmint shooting, but it is not up to competition. My dad tried to build one for shooting local level small bore f-class, to get it to shoot with the basic Anschutz he spent more money then simply buying a Anschutz to begin with. Spend a little more on a good action to start off with and it will keep you from spend a lot more by having to start over to stay competitive later.

Her are a few places to look. A nice 40X is there now.

Also go to Dan's used BR rifle page. You can find some really good deals there.

Good luck, It's addicting!

Everything depends on budget. If yours is around $2000 between stock, barrel bedding, pillaring, etc., take a long, hard look at getting something custom made with a target action, benchrest stock and match barrel. You might just come at that number or a bit above brand new.

Without insult or swipe of any sort intended, you can do what you want to dress up a Savage or CZ, but it will still not shoot as accurately as an Anschutz or a custom made rig.

I have a friend that was shooting in a 22 BR league and wanted to get a"bench gun" so I put him in touch with Brian Voelker in Ryan IA. who knows 22's and happened to have a used 40X that he said shot very well . He bought it and followed Brians advise and not the other club "benchrest gunsmiths " and flat out won the league . Advise you to find someone you can trust , Killough and Voelker are two of others , and buy a good used shooter that they can recomend realizing that YOU are the opperator and NOT the rifle . After you've shot it for awhile and you're sure that it needs some work - send it off to the gunsmith . If nothing's wrong - leave it alone . Learn how to shoot first .

And if I were to do it all over again, that is what I would have done instead of purchasing an Anschutz 1913 NIB. Hindsight is a wonderful thing- also not thinking a purchase all the way through because of lack of knowledge.

I agree with this, likewise I had spent a lot of time and effort trying to turn a squirrel rifle into something it wasn't meant to be. Before building a custom with a budget in mind, I'd first look at buying a used rifle that was already built for that competition. Ask around and you might be surprised at what surfaces, and keep your eyes peeled on the classifieds here and elsewhere too.

What kind of matches are you looking to shoot in? If you haven't yet visited one of the matches you plan on shooting in, definitely do so before spending any money. That way you can see exactly what equipment is being used by your soon-to-be friends and competitors, and how. The benchrest rig overall includes more than just a gun with the rests and scope, and it all has to work together like a system.
