Savage LRPV 6BR Chamber - No Turn Brass ?

I am considering purchasing a Savage LRPV in 6BR. I just spoke to Savage on the telephone and they would not tell me the chamber dimensions (we don't discuss reloading). Can anyone tell me the dimension? Is this a good candidate for Lapua no turn brass? Have shooters been using no turn Lapua with good luck?

Many thanks.

I have a Savage BR model in 6BR with a 1-8 twist barrel and I use blue box no turn brass. Prior to the BR model I had the LPRV in the same configuration and used blue box no turn brass in it. Both rigs have several 1/4 MOA groups in our local long range matches. These rifles are very accurate for factory units.

Don't know the chamber dimensions but I just fire formed and set my sizing dies up from there. Never had any issues.

thumper - Many thanks. I am not new to rifle reloading but I am new to the 6BR and the Savage looks like a great choice. I can't wait to pull the trigger.

thumper - quick questions - Did you like the LRPV? Would you do it again? I am also considering the 1-8 twist.

Steve,

I purchased the Savage LPRV earlier this year and have been quite pleased with it. I am doing more long range shooting and may sell the Savage as I purchased a customized rifle. I shot a .277 group at 100 yds. with 90 GR Scenar and VV N135 earlier this year, the Savage can certainly shoot.

i wonder if dburkart an thumper4fun could measure their fired case at the neck of 6br Savage.

maybe is what Steve is looking for an i'm curious myself of that measurement..?

i'm thinking of re barreling my LRPV in .223 to 6 also.... not looking to steal the threads
Thanks

Just to clarify...

There is no such thing as "Lapua blue box no turn brass"... no such thing as ANY makers "no turn brass".

It is the chamber neck that determines if the gun has a "no turn neck".

A loaded Lapua 6mmBR round will measure about 0.270/0.271"

A chamber that has a neck larger than 0.273/0.274" will have a "no turn neck".

that would be the reason for asking the measurement of the fired case at the neck from Savages LPRV stock 6Br barrel from dburkart an thumper4fun

I have a Savage LRPV in 6BR and shoot Lapua brass. It is the most accurate factory rifle I have ever owned

My reamer from Kiff for Lapua blue box (me no turn :) ) is .2704. Loaded round measures right at .268. Is there something I'm missing? Still at the smith.

No... you are not missing anything - your necks will clear the chamber.

Unfortunately I have not shot the Savage recently and thus can't measure the neck. But I have never turned it just done full length sizing with a Redding .266 die I believe.

I shoot long range bench rest so even though my LPRV was a very accurate rifle I prefer the BR model with the 3" wide flat forened. Depending on your need the LPRV may be a better choice. I would definitely get the 1-8 twist 6br barrel unless you plan to shoot short range exclusively.

.271 for fired brass from my factory savage and a loaded round measures .269 and I use a .267 bushing.

I am certainly no expert but I would bet the 6BR Savage barrels are chambered for the 6BR REM case, right from the SAMMI spec sheet.

No one has mentioned throat length and this is one parameter where custom reamers shine. You can get a chamber designed for the exact bullet you shoot. But, saying that, my first bench rest gun had a Shilen pre-fit barrel in 243 WIN which I would bet was chambered for the 243 WIN SAMMI spec. And, it shot better than me for a couple years and only became limited when it finally got shot out after 2500 rounds!

You will not be unhappy with the Savage!, just use Lapua blue box cases and get a LEE die set as well as a LEE collet sizer! It will probably like A-MAX, SMK and Berger Hybrids at 105 to 107 gr.

There is no SAAMI spec sheet for the 6mmBR.

In spite of being around for some 35 years (1978) none of the BR cartridges have ever been accepted by SAAMI.

Savage built their 6br rifles to compete with the other custom guns in 6br. That means they had to go with the same throat to shoot the heavier 105+ bullets needed to be competitive. I'm certain the chambering is likely in 6BR Lapua - not the shorter-necked Remington version.

As for wanting to see the chamber dimensions, looking up the dimensions for the 6br Remington (other than the length of the neck and Leade) should give you the dimensions you are looking for - as approximations. The Berger Manual and the newest Hornady manuals both have drawings. I would do a chamber cast if you want to see exact. Not bad to have just to know how much extra room you actually have in your neck - not that it would be needed using Lapua brass with a factory rifle from Savage.
