savage LRH chamber, (6.5-284)

With a Berger VLD 142 gr. bullet I get a chamber length of 3.238.
A SMK 140 gr. has only the boat tail hanging in the neck.
What little info I could find gives a length of around 3" (chamber)
Sierra 140 SMK would have quite a commute to the riflings!

Thoughts?

Most savages if not all factory barrels are throated deep to curtail high pressures no matter what ammo you make or buy for it.If you want a better throat then you will have to get it set back and rechambered.

I think the 3" I read was incorrect, might have been a different model.
Late in the day and I was suffering info overload!
Berger says OK to load to a 3.228 max COAL, but better to jump the bullet.

I shot it later yesterday, "entry level" loads, 49 grs. H4831SC, 140 Berger, Lapua brass Fed. primer. COL was 3.00 (I had loaded them before discovering how long the chamber is)
Around .42 @100 yds. , hoping for better after a bit more length

I think that is reasonable for a new barrel, first loads. (Better than my 6mm BR did which cost 2.5X the Savage price)

Thanks for the reply
