Savage laminated stock finish

Called Savage and got the runaround from customer service. Was told that if I refinished the stock, the warranty was void.
No kidding! ::)
Anyway, I am trying to find what the original finish was on the BVSS laminated stock. I've gotten some pretty nasty gouges in the stock and want to sand them out and touch-up to match the original finish. I kind of like the original satin finish.
Not really wanting to, but I am also open to removing all of the original finish and using some other type.
Thanks for your input.

I am guessing it is a spray-on finish and most likely a polyurethane type. :D

FWIW, that is what I would use after prepping the stock. I especially like MinWax spray polyurethane as the spray nozzles are very consistent in their application of finish and you cam ad additional coats after only 2 hours.

I just completed a stock ( a CMP Daisy 853 refurb) refinish using the semi-gloss MinWax polyurethane and it came out really nice.

I will second the Minwax Polyurethane sprays nicely. It also tends to yellow with age. It never gets completely hard that is why is is used on wood. This is to accomodate expansion and contraction due to the humidity.

I like auto finish clear coat better. It dries quickly and many coats can be applied in a short period of time. You need to be extremely carefull if you use a polycyanite(sp) paint. It will kill you "DEAD" if you don't use the proper protection.

Thank you very much for your input Travelor and Rustystud.
It looks like I will be sanding the stock down and starting over on the finish.

I sprayed automotive clear on top of the factory finish on a model 12 benchrest stock over 6 months ago. Holding up very well. Roughed it up with very fine Scotch brite pad and sprayed 12 coats. 3 at a time, not real heavy. Roughed up with Scotch brite between every 3 coats. I polished the final application to near mirror finish with Turtle wax swirl and scratch remover then Nufinish wax. The isocyanates are deadly but I used a 3M cartridge respirator, Tyvek suit and chemical goggles and didn't have any reactions but you have to know the dangers going in.
