Savage : is it center feed or staggered Feed ???

I have a savage re-barreled action with NO Magazine box or spring and follower . I want to GLUE in a follower and create a single shot . The only things that I can tell you that was in .308 , the bolt was marked "TACTICAL" , and it was in a green stock marked Col. John Plaster. Can anyone help me ???? I can't be the only one who has one of these and can tell me whether it is center or staggered feed . Thank you in advance for any help you can give me .

i was pretty sure kmart was right. this from boyds website

Center to Center of Action Screws: 4 9/32" : This stock is designed for the Savage Blind Magazine with Staggered Feed action

Center to Center of Action Screws: 4 7/16" : This stock is designed for the Savage Blind Magazine with Center Feed Action

if you ever really want to know ANYTHING about savage, go to savageshooters.com

Savage also made some earlier 308's on 110 long actions. They have a spacer on the bolt to shorten it.They are staggered feed.

Since this was originally a .308 and now has been rebarreled into.30-06 I’m wondering if JFM33 has the answer and that it’s one of those actions, long, that’s a 110 .It has to be a long action or a 30-06 would not function in the opening. That would make it a staggered feed if his information is correct. No offense but how can I be sure? SSS has responded to my email but needs to know, center or staggered???

If you flip the action over and look at the magwell recess there will be milling cuts at the fore and aft ends of the well for a stagger feed. If there are no mill cuts then it was a center feed.
I just recently finished a 110 long action that started life as a 22-250 and the action was milled for a short mag box. The back of the action was solid. I have seen them with different baffles and blocks in the long mag box also.

Well, now I'm all confused. You said it was in .308 and re-barreled. Now you say it was re-barreled in 30-06?
Every Savage action I have seen that was manufactured after 2005 has NOTHING other than a serial number on the action. If you want to know the original model of the action, then someone will have to come along who can decipher the serial number. I'm not that guy.
If you want to know if it was a long action or short action, I suggest measuring the bolt from the bolt handle to the bolt face.
And as previously mentioned, among SHORT actions, in my experience, the stagger feeds were the 4.27" action screw spacing and the 4.40" spacing were the center feed spacing. This is for Model 10s, 12s, 16s etc. I've no experience with target actions, so I can not comment on them.
If that differs in long actions, I'd really like to hear how to identify them.

Sorry if this only adds to the confusion. I'd like to know the answer myself.

Try this link... It might clear up some confusion. Again if the action has a slot milled into the front and back of the magazine well it will be a stagger feed. The milled slots are there to hold the magazine box in place. Center feed magazines attach to the stock not the action.

I think you've answered my question as the magazine box was fastened to the action and was taken off therefore ...stagger feed !! Thank you !

It must be a staggered feed then as the mag well was taken off the action and was not part of the stock. I thank you for your feedback and have a great holiday.

If you're curious, you can call Savage Customer Service and provide them the serial number. They will tell you exactly what it was when it left the factory, and sell you any parts you may need. They do require you to sign a waiver of liability for certain items such as bolt parts, but it's a simple process, and BTW; they are the cheapest source for Savage parts.
