Savage extractor issue

Awhile back I post on here about an issue with extraction problems with my Savage 22-250. A member on here actually sent me a bag of tiny little "balls" that go under the extractor to help with releasing the brass too early. I also ordered a couple of "bolt head rebuild kits" just to have on hand, well I finally got around to messing with it to fix the issue and was going to try the little ball first but found this... can anybody explain why there is this difference in the extractors??

Never saw that before. If it's really machined like that, I'm guessing it's a defect that made it through inspection.

Its a defect, never seen one like that on all the ones Ive replaced since 86, should all be like the right one.

At first I thought it was simply broke off at that corner but it is clearly machined that way. Not sure if it's supposed to be or not though??? The new one on the right with the larger detent ball did indeed fix my issue so there is that!

I would guess it is a faulty product that got past inspection. Have never seen one with that look. Use the proper one and you should have no issues, along with the larger bearing.

I purchased a savage axis a little over a year ago and it had the same extractor as the one on the left. I thought it was broken but it was machined that way. The ejector had a strange angle also on the end. Cases ejected okay, but sometimes they would fall back into the action. Bought replacements for both from Midway that looked normal, and have had no trouble since. I don’t understand what savage was trying to do but it was not working for me.

I just replaced my ball bearing under my extractor with a bigger one, and it cured the early dumping of the cases. I only shot about 30 rounds in very windy conditions at a small plate at 430 yards.

It's not a bug, it's a feature ;)

The extractor is probably one like what they use on the .300WSM and similar 'fat' cartridges. My understanding is that they started using that to counter some feeding issues with those cartridges. The first time I encountered that kind of extractor was an upgraded bolt for the 6.5 CM, which has it's own dimension issues with Hornady brass. I think they tried the new extractor to ease some of the feeding issues with AICS mags. I'm not convinced it helps very much with that, but there ya go.

I just checked and 2 out of 3 of the short action Savages in my safe have the corner machined off of the extractor as shown in the OP’s pic labeled “old”. All three of mine extract just fine. Only one of them which is the 22-243ai actually ejects due to the fact that I removed the ejector because I hate chasing brass. The 204R and 6 BRAI both hold the brass tight until it’s stripped out with a finger. All three extracted and ejected fine in stock form.
