savage bolt

An idea was offered by a friend to swap the wave washer position with the dummy trailing locking lugs, as a aid in keeping bolt lube on the bearing locking lugs towards front of the bolt. My concern is, has this been done and could it affect accuracy ??

I do it to every Savage that comes in the shop. The only purpose is like your friend said, to keep lube on the bolt lugs.

One note...it is very easy to switch. If, when you put the bolt back together, the back head ( I think Savage calls it the baffle ) is hard to turn, just take it back apart and flip the spring washer. It works great one way, but binds the other way.

Can you tell us which way the spring should be oriented? cup shape towards bolt or towards rear?

I don't remember and I don't have one in right now to check, but it's a 50/50 chance with no real effort to re-do if you end up wrong.

No machining.
