Savage Bolt spacing problem.

There is a stock for sale here on the forum that I am interested in getting but my problem is that I can not personally inspect my rifle to see what the bolt spacing is. My rifle is a model 12 ADL in 22-250 with the supper cheap plastic stock that is only there because I could not afford to replace it at the time. Only person that is able to look at the rifle is my sister and she measured the bolts and came up with 9 inchs....... Don't think thats right and have a hard time teaching things when not in person so have to figure this out another way. Rifle is blued and has an accutrigger if that helps. I just need to know what the spacing is on my rifle.

Easiest way would be to take a caliper and measure from the front action screw to the rear action screw. I think that's what you're looking for.

Tell her to measure from the screw on the bottom of the stock that is farthest from the trigger guard to the one closest to the trigger guard. She should get about 4-1/4" or almost 4-1/2". I have 2 model 12's. Both have an accu-trigger. One has the 4-1/4" spacing. The other is 3-3/4". The latter is a 3 screw target action.

jbpmidas your post so far has shed some immense light on this. She got 3 and 3/4 the second time I had her measure the bolts. I had just only heard of the 4 and a quarter and 4 and half spacings before. I can't have her use the calipers as she doesn't know how to read them and they are not digital. She is a stubborn learner and refuses to learn things she doesn't think apply to her but still a helpful sis.

I am still waiting to hear back from her if it is 2 or 3 screws. Worst case is that i purchase a stock I can't use and gain an excuse to buy another rifle to put in it but I would rather not as so far not a huge fan of the savage.

Not a huge fan of Savage? Blasphemy! I've got two right now. One of them I built. I can't wait to start on my next one! It will be a long action .30-06!

It is nothing personal I just got a barrel that fouls badly. It will shot 1/4 inch group with factory federal ammo at 200 yards and I can repeat it. I just have to clean it for 20 minutes between each and every group as after 4 rounds it goes to a 5 inch gun at the same distance. I plan on getting a 22-250AI barrel for it for shooting heavies down the line but not till I get a decent stock and I want to do away with the nut. And on the federal ammo that shoots like that I went back to the store and bought 80 more rounds after the first 20 just so I would have an even 100. I take it out to beat my friends in our version of an egg shoot at 200. You get one sighter and one shot to hit a shotgun shell. Looser pays range fees.

That's too bad! I shot 20 rounds through mine yesterday. I cleaned it this morning. I scrub it briskly with Hoppe's 9 and let it soak for 10-15 minutes. Then, my 4th patch usually comes out clean. Then I oil the barrel.

What caliber and twist is yours? How many rounds? After the 20 yesterday, mine has 170.

I bought mine used off of a 1LT for cheap and he said he shot it a bit. The barrel will be replaced just because I am not a big fan of all the body taper the 22-250 has. I believe it is a 14 or 12 twist. I know it is no faster than that as I remember checking with a cleaning rod for the twist before getting my first few boxes of ammo for it. I have shot 95 rounds threw it in 5 shot sets. and have 20 rounds left of the federal batch that did so good in it. I also came across a box of lapua brass for it I have held on to for when I go Ackley with it.

So found out from my sister finally it has 2 bottom screws. I think I might have her take a picture of a ruler laying next to the screws as she is a great photographer and maybe I can make the call from that?.
