Savage B22 Precision

I can't tell you about the .22, but my B17 Precision does not mark the next round. The rotary mag works very well. Just thinking out loud, but I think there could be a market for a screw on barrel, for a Savage, with the threaded action. My B17 is extremely accurate. Kind of want a .22lr

Thanks for your thoughts, Pat. I looked at a couple of online reviews and tests of the 22 Precision that had problems with fliers that appeared to be caused by the bolt dragging on the next round in the magazine and leaving quite a noticeable mark on it. That mark then seems to affect the accuracy. I'd like to buy one, but don't want to have to deal with that problem.

The .22lr mag might be different, or it could have been a mag issue? All I can say is I don't think any ammo shot over 3/4" for 5 on a calm day, with many 1/2" or slightly under. I think it would be fun to put a Lilja barrel on it with my .17HMR match PTG reamer, but I don't know if it would shoot any better.

Pretty sure the .17HMR would not have the problem, due to the cartridge having a shoulder. The videos of the tests clearly show a mar on .22LR lead bullets as the points stick up out of the magazine quite a bit and the bolt goes across them. There also seems to have been a problem with the one tested no ejecting all the time. The attached picture is from the site where the test was done and clearly shows a mar on the bullet and the case which didn't eject.

Thats a bummer. I wonder if there is a burr on the bolt? I would like to look over in person to see if it's an easy fix or not.

Yes, I'd like to see it for myself too, so I just ordered one from my local gun shop. I'm not a big fan of rotary mags but the B22 Precision is very attractive to me. Reports on the various forums indicate some of the early ones had problems extracting and ejecting and that maybe the mag didn't snap into place every time. I'm hoping they've got that fixed.

I have more .22's than I can ever shoot, but still would like to get this or a B22 FVSR. The Savage rotary mag is a pain in the butt to load, but feeds fantastic. Tented to use a small plastic pin to start to rotate the feed lips. I know you should not have to mess with it, but I would polish and radius the bottom of the bolt that slides over the next round. I think they fixed the extraction issues. Not sure if the chamber was too tight or what the issue was. I am a bit weird, but I enjoy a little tinkering about as much as shooting to see what I can do to improve the groups. This is by far the best Savage Rimfire design and it's a bit sad that they don't spend a couple of more minutes to finish the job, because that is all it would take most of the time.

Thanks for sharing, Pat. I've had several expensive target .22s and have sold them and given up on their constant fussiness. The B22 will just be a fun-to-shoot (I hope) range gun that I can shoot factory class at a few area rimfire shoots. I like the things Savage has done with it and hope the magazine/marking/extraction problems have all been fixed. I really don't like rotary magazines and wish they made it with a standard "clip" but I'm willing to give it a try. I'm actually ordering it today at my gun shop and not sure what availability will be.

Mine would gouge the brass and scrape the bullet of the next round, I removed the bolt and filed that sharp edge down then polished it. Problem solved for me plus if the gun is new the mag springs are pretty stiff pushing the rounds up pretty hard when they get some time on them they weaking up a little and it gets smoother. Keep your mag full when not shooting to keep the springs compressed.
