Savage axis vs other Savage rifles

I am looking for a walk around varmint rifle, with future modifications. I wanted to know what the difference is between the axis and other savage rifles. Like barrel interchangeability, stocks and all the other thing that make Savage rifles so garage smith friendly. I was planning on a sporter weight 22.250, then in the future maybe a 6mm br with a 24-26" heavy sporter or magnum barrel. I think that would be a great coyote/woodchuck zapper. I really have no use for a heavy barrel gun. I am more interested in cold barrel accuracy. Even when woodchuck hunting you are not burning up hundreds of rounds in a day. With the heavy sporter barrel you still would be able to tote the thing around comfortably.

The Savage Edge/Axis is a different action than the Savage/Stevens. The Axis is a newer platform with limited aftermarket options in terms of triggers, scope bases, and stocks. Same barrel nut and threads on both so they are interchangeable. If you want ultimate cheap Savage/Steven build in my option, find an older Stevens 200 with the blind magazine. This gives you a lot more stock options from vendors like Boyd's that are very reasonable. The newer Stevens 200 are centerfeed and don't have as good of a selection of stocks... yet. In five years, the centerfeed stocks with probably be common aftermarket items.

I put together a Stevens 200 as my first Savage build. SSS trigger, Boyd's thumbhole varminter stock, and a Shilen barrel my gunsmith chambered. I latter had SSS do a true and time on the action. Still less than a $750 investment and a have purchased several other barrel for it.

With that said, I looked at a Axis Stainless steel package this weekend at Cabelas for $349. For a walking hunter, I really like this gun.

The Axis/Edge has no recoil lug. There's some kind of slot in the receiver and the lug is part of the stock. My guess is that issue alone would STOP any consideration of the rifle if any modifications or changes were in future plans.

Then there is the trigger issue. Sure, you now can get a Rifle Basics for it. Add that price to the purchase and you are up to a good action/trigger model. Of course you may like that hideous stock and grip design. There's no accounting for taste.

For a basic rifle that you wont do any changes to its a good unit.
For about $140 more you can buy a standard savage M10/M110, accutrigger rifle and be miles ahead of the game in upgrades over the axis. You can find the Stevens M200 for the same prices and be ahead of the axis again.

Thanks for the replies. I really don't like the edge/axis guns that much, I think the stocks make them look goofy. I was looking at the Stevens as the basis for the build and was just wondering about the difference between the two. If I could find a M10 in fairly good shape w/accu trigger it would be a bonus. I will keep my eyes open and see what comes up.

I have done 2 stevens 200 builds--More like restocked with SSS upgrades--Just ordered the Rifle Basix Trigger for one-- plan to upgrade barrels when the factory tubes are done(or maybe sooner)--I have been very happy with the guns for the money--I paid $179 for one and $260 for the other new-- Added Boyds stocks bedding SSS followers and trigger guards sss Tac Bolts and now triggers --both factory tubes shoot .75 or better @100(have not worked loads to any extent)
