I am already thinking about another project. I am thinking f-class would be some fun IF i decide to do an f class build i MIGHT use a savage action. My question is, can a savage action be competitive? Are there any savage actioned rifles winning? My ffl dealer is not doing any more ffl transfers so this project will be a while, just in the thinking stages know, thats all. Lee

I can't offer a for sure yes or no on that question. The Savage actions have brought a 'factory' accuracy action to the masses.
But from what i've seen at Camp Perry the last two years, 08, and 09, I saw only ONE savage based rifle on the 1K line.

What I saw was mostly Barnard's, RPA's, a few Stillers and the scattered Remington 40x and a few 700's

I honestly thing that if Savage pulled off they factory barrels, and screwed on a Hart, Krieger, or other custom barrel.
Raised their price $400, their rifle would still be affordable, and do away with the so-so accuracy rumors I herd of, and offer the end user a greatly improved product...

Just my 2 cents worth...

most of your winners have been shooting long before the sav. came out.

ask team savage about how good they are. - they are shooting f-t/r guns and factory bbls. i've shot along side darel and company and let me tell you that those guns can shoot.

having said that, you can't pick one up, buy a box bullets and expect to win [unless your someone like mid tompkins or tom whittaker]. you MUST fine tune your loads to the action/bbl.

generally speaking, as a shooter gets better, he will buy up to a more proven gun/equip. therefore never giving the sav. a chance. i will predict that it will take sometime [years] before you see top shooters using a savage. it will proable take a very good shooter to pick one up and win a bunch with it.

Are they winning at the small club level? I dont plan to go to far with all this, but you never know. I said the same thing about sporting clays and 3 years later i was a state champ. Anyway I have heard rumors that the lock time is to slow trigger is just average at best, and not really a match trigger. those type of things. I personally think they are kinda fugly but that doesnt really matter if it will shoot well. I am wanting a 260AI in a savage action for f-class pretty bad. Weather or not i compete a bunch remains to be seen. Just looking for some info from some guys that shoot on the local range comps. Lee

Lee, it sounds to me that you are going to buy one anyway, your mind is made up. This is a good thing because they do shoot well! I shoot a few Savages against custom actions and barrels and I beat them out 50% of the time. That tells me its me not the gun making the mistakes. The thing is not many people around here like admitting that their custom rig,1 year in the making and $3000+ later) can be beat with an off the shelf gun. However, its true. But I do agree that it will take the correct amount of load work up and testing just like with any gun. Plus, you need to get lucky with your 'factory' barrel. other than that the other factors you mentioned are slight and i think the action and trigger are kind of purdy!

lee,

NO, i'm not not talking about small local level shooter. I'M TALKING ABOUT INTERNATIONAL LEVEL!!

TEAM SAVAGE CAPTAINED BY DARYL BUYELL, CAPTION OF THE USA F-T/R TEAM, HOLDER OF SEVERAL NATIONAL RECORDS.

before you start worrying about lock time and such other nonsence - learn to shoot. the trigger can be adjusted down to a crisp pound [and single stage if you dare]

get yourself a savage in 6br and hang a 'good' scope on it.

bye the bye, do you know how to develope a 'winning load'? or do you just go out and buy a box and then complain about 'how a gun doesn't shoot'?

congrats on your 'state championship', but it sounds like you think more of yourself then what there actually is!

I shoot a Savage in prone and bench. It's chambered in 6CM.I shoot at several clubs from 600 out to 1000 yards and I alwats shoot up front.I own four of them.I've got some custom remington's for sale...:) Don Dunlap

Habu or what ever your name is, were are you coming from here dude?? I have several nice rifles and i shoot them just fine!! I am thinking about an f-class rifle. I wasn't asking for your opinion about myself. And hell yes i am proud of myself for my shooting accomplishment. Wouldnt you be? Heck i even won my class at the us open, name was in the magazines and all the other good stuff, but that has nothing to do with how a savage will shoot. I was just giving you an idea that i may in fact want to compete one day, as i am competitive. You need better house manners dude!
here are the kind of riflesi play with and how this one shot the fist time out with un taylored hand loads and a crappy rear bag while shooting prone!!

I am not, yet) a competitive shooter, but I did just recently buy a Savage 10 FCP in 308. Came with a Choate tactical stock and needed a little cleaning up to smooth things out. Put a Weaver T36 on it and my most recent range trip put 5 168 Amax rounds in a 1.25' group at 300 yds.
Accutrigger came set at 1.5 pounds. Did not like the cheek piece that came with it, so I got one from Karsten and it works great.
Still working on the load and hope to get it a little better.

Can't say how competitive this setup would be, but thought some actual numbers might help you decide. And, just for s*its and grins, here is a picture.

skeetlee,
Most any action is accurate enough to win any match as long as it is trued and reliable. I think that ammunition and barrel are more critical than the action, but the most critical part of the equation is the shooter. Time and again in International competition I see people win with what some would call inferior equipment but the shooter is on his game. Go ahead and use the Savage if that is what makes you happy. Just work with it to get all the components, including the shooter) tuned in and you will do fine.
