Savage action ?

I have a savage action 14. I plan on building a 7 mm wsm with a 32" 1.125 kieger finished barrel 3" 4 port break and a bell and carlson with full aluminum bedding. I was told that the barrel may be a little heavy for that action. What are some thought. Barrel weighs 10 pound as a blank and the brake ways 1/2 pound.

The action the tennon is the same size as a Remington but with that weight barrel . I would recommend a barrel block. Larry

I've used 1 1/4 dia. x 30" on Sav 12 w/ HS alum bedded stock before, the set up worked fine.
If you used a Block it would go in front of the action bedding.

Can't afford a bat. Lol

I was just messin with ya. But even the savage target action would be a better choice as it isn't a repeater and has a lot more metal making it much stiffer to accommodate heavy barrels. Could probably sell the model 14 fairly easy and put it towards a Savage target action. Can usually pick the target action up for well under $600, and it comes with a better trigger (not a good trigger, just a better trigger). Plus you could get the dual port which will make bench shooting a lot easier and allow you to get shots down range faster.

Not going to be bench shooting. Lol I'm building it to go set up on a ridge and shoot down in to the bottoms for what ever presents itself then move a repeat. I just posted here because I figured this is a little heavier than most hunters use and you comp shooter might have more of a idea if anyone is using this action and barrel weight combo

What is the logic of such a heavy contour? Not being smart, just curious if you could get by with a Sendero contour or something similar.

Heat dissipation and barrel rigidity which aids in accuracy when multiple rounds are fired in succession. The length of a barrel has nothing to do with accuracy, simply just for extra speed. Though you want enough speed to maintain supersonic speeds at 1K yards for proper bullet stabilization. That's why most 6mm competition rifles use 27"+ long barrels. Helps add a bit of speed to small rounds like the 6mm Dasher so they stay supersonic at long range because the 6mm bullet BC's aren't very high. Only +/- .550 BC's with the heavy bullets.

A 300 WSM could easily stay supersonic with heavy bullets at 1K with a 22" barrel, but it will create a lot of heat and barrel whip. The heavy contour will help reduce both of those factors that deteriorate accuracy.

If just ringing steel or punching paper for leisure purposes, there's no reason a sendero contour wouldn't be just as accurate to an extent because you could stop and let the barrel cool if need be.

Austin,
I built a 1000 yd gun on a Savage PTA, using a Barltien 1.25 SS barrel in 6.5. I neck down a 7 mm SAUM case to 6.5 and run a Berger 140 grain at 2850 to 2950. I have the reamer for this cartridge.
I bedded the stock with an aluminum Whidden bedding block, installed a Rifle Basix trigger and the gun shoots sub MOA all day (the shooters ability may vary ;-)
I say go for it....fun and accuracy doesn't always have to come at great expense. Best of luck!!

Actions don't make gun shoot. If the action locks up straight and true is all that matters . I have 3 target actions that was so true they didn't need anything done. The bolt face needed a small touch up . Replace the bolts with a kiff And the lugs locked up with 90 % contact . The barrel were chambers and timed up . They shoot as good as my custom .
The barrel and reloading practices is where accuracy come from . But without a good shooter The result on target will be the same . Larry

We can all agree that benchrest is a competition based on small group size, aka -accuracy.

Soooo, if the action doesnt matter for accuracy and everyone is using high end custom barrels with Savage, Remington, or custom actions...Why don't Savage actioned rifles hold any benchrest world records?
I doubt it's because the shooters capable of breaking the records just like to spend more money on a full custom action for no reason...

The action weigh a half pound more the the other actions .
Isn't That's like why do you put a heavy scoop on your guns .
Lol. Larry

Larry -
While Savage actions do weigh more then some, they also weigh less then others.

Making LT-Gun weight with a Savage build is easy in 600/1000-BR.
Seen it again last summer at the Montana 1000-BR Championship. Two Savage action rifles in the field, of which one weighed in at 15.92-lbs with a NF scope, and the other weighed in at 15.42-lbs with a Sightron. Both being well under the 17-lb max weight limit !.!.!

You might hit spell check. We weren't discussing scopes, we were discussing scoops.

Tom -
Starting to read through "jibber" more fluidly, and missed that !.!.!
Spell check doesn't do jibber very well, and suggests "scope" as the optimal spelling.
