I am rebuilding a Savage 99. I took it to a machinist who did descent work for me before. He bolted and now I have a mess of what would have been a simple rebarreling.
The bolt was missing the extractor so I ordered one and got one. The extractor doesn't fit into the bolt well. It rides high and possibly a bit long. I would try to find another, but it seems that they are rather hard to find and get here in Canada due to US laws. Should I try to trim about 1/16 of an inch off it so that it is flush with the sides of the bolt or would taking off that much metal ruin the extractor's ability to function?
I think that the tip of it can be trimmed down so it can the notch machined in the barrel to enter it the with no ill effects to that part of the extractor.
Anyone ever have to do this to a Savage model 99. I'd like to keep it. It's my first rifle and has alot of memories attached to it
