Savage 99 mysteries - Need help !

Hey all !

I just added 2 more 99s to my collection, but there are 2 areas of interest that I'm confused about and was wondering if one of you Savage savvy members can help me with:

1. One of them, after removing the side mount Pachmeyer scope mount, shows only "Savage Model 99" stamped on the receiver. The bolt however, is jeweled, and it does not look like an aftermarket job. It looks like a factory job. It's in .308, and based on boss code, it was manufactured in 1959. It appears to also be factory drilled and tapped for a scope mount, or at the very least, done after market, but I'll never figure out why someone along the way thought it a better idea to drill more holes where they don't belong.

The question is, did Savage offer factory jeweled bolts on other than the 99F models ?

2. The other one has only an asterisk where the boss code would normally be found and has no model at all stamped on the receiver. Based on the serial number, it was manufactured in 1949, is in 300 Savage, and also has a jeweled bolt that appears factory.

The questions are: Has anyone ever come across a Savage 99 with no model stamping on the receiver and / or an asterisk only on the boss ?

Thank you all in advance !

My Model 99 Take Down, .22 High Power manufactured in 1918 does not have any model numbers or anything else stamped on the receiver. The only stampings are on the barrel

Thank you.
That's so strange. I've never seen that before.
It's obviously a 99 and yes, it has the rolled manufacturer stamping on the barrel.
Do you know if Savage manufactured models other than the 99F with jeweled bolts ?

I’m far from being a Savage 99 expert. I only have one. I have a buddy that has a nice collection and I’ve noticed several of his have jeweled bolts. I don’t know if the jeweling is original.
