Savage 99 250 Savage question

Hi all,

I recently got ahold of a 1935 manufacture 99 in 250-3000.

It came with a replacement rear sight that was fully adjustable for windage and elevation.

First trip to the range even at it's lowest setting, I was shooting about 6" low at 50 yards which is my benchmark for sighting in before moving out to 100 yards.

I reached out to the guy I got it from who found the mount that it was drilled and tapped for and he kindly mounted it for me.

It's a Redfield base designed for the Leupold twist on 1 piece rings.

I got a Leupold VX-III for it, mounted it, and hit the range.

I got the windage dead on, but at the scopes highest setting, I was still shooting 6" low.

Just curious if there have ever been issues with a drooping barrel on the 99s.

I find it hard to believe that the mount AND the scope are defective.

Anyone ?

Thank you !

Move the rear sight in the direction you want your hit to go. Raise the rear sight to raise your hits.

Sounds like a joke we used to kid each other about at the range: "If your rifle shoots
too high, just put the end of the barrel behind the bumper of your pickup and PULL
HARD on the buttstock!"
Seriously, it sounds like a time to take a yardstick and put it against the length of the barrel on 4 sides and see if you can detect any variation. Better yet have a gunsmith
check it out for straightness and look at the scope mounts. Sometimes the front and rear
just need to be reversed.
Best Wishes...It sounds like it COULD BE a fun piece if those bugs get worked out.

I was going to tell you to get a set of Burris Signature Zee rings for the Redfield base. You can offset the scope to match the problem using the different inserts. They work very well. If the Redfield bases were made for the dovetail and flat bottom Leupold rings, Burris makes them to fit.

However, your "1 piece rings" have me wondering if this solution will work. I don't know what 1 piece rings are.

I just saw your reply.
I ended up shimming the rear of the scope mount with 2 very thin pieces of aluminum from a beverage can.
That did the trick.
Shooting 5 into a dime at 100 yards with elevation to spare !
I hunted with it and took 2 doe on opening day.
What the hydrostatic shock of that 87 grain pill did to their hearts AND lungs was nothing short of impressive.
It's my new favorite !

Thank you Jim.

The Leupold rings are connected on a piece of steel that the front goes into an oval in the front of the base at 90 degrees and then the whole mount swivels to line up with the base and is set in the rear of the mount by two screws which also help with windage if need be.
It's shooting perfect now !

I shimmed the rear of the mount and problem solved !
Thank you !

Probably the first deer a 250 has ever taken.

Ahem.

I bet that's one great old rifle in a grand old caliber. Glad you got it worked out.
Thank you ! She sure is !
I did a lot of research on that nifty little cartridge and knew I would have one.
Larry Koller's "Shots at Whitetails" clinched it for me.
I could not be happier with the 99 or the results !

Was like you wondering about 1 piece rings? Pretty sure the base was this
https://www.leupold.com/std-savage-99-1-pc-matte. And the rings go into the base and twist. You can use the 2 screws at the rear to adjust your windage. I had several friends that had them but I never liked them. They work, but just not my cup of tea.
Anyway, OP, Glad you got it figured out and took some deer with it. I always have wanted one but have too many projects going. .25 cal gets the job done Again.

The base is actually a Redfield 99.
I believe they patented this before Leupold.
I wish I had more time for projects LoL !

Talkin about bending a barrel on a rifle, jokingly. My dad had a 3in. 870 that would pattern low at 40 yds. He stuck the barrel in the fork of a apple tree and bent it up. Got it just right. Hes killed alot of turkeys with it since. I asked him how he knew when to stop. He said he got lucky. Doug
