Savage 6mm barrel

I have a 22-250 stock savage model 12 lpv and am thinking about putting a drop in shilen or pacnor barrel in a no turn 6mm BR caliber. This rifle will be used for fun non competion shooting @ 100 to 600 yards. Has anyone used any drop in barrels for accuracy on this type of rifle? Any comments or sugestions on the best brand of barrel, length of barrel, would be greatly appreciated.,I will be handloading for this rifle) Thanks.

If you are interested, Northland has 6BR McGowen barrels in stock,or did a few days ago anyway). I just got one in the mail yesterday. It certainly looks nice and I will let you know how it shoots in a few days.

Jeff, the in stock Shilen and Mcgowen barrels from Jim at Northland are a very good deal price wise,in fact much less than you pay direct from either company, but if you go with a fast twist for the longer bullets of any caliber with these barrels be prepared to do some sweet talking with the barrel maker or your gunsmith because the throat is cut with a standard reamer and is not long enough to get the base of the bullets out of the case.Shilen didnt have a problem recutting the throat on the barrel I bought from Jim,they just told me to send a dummy round along with it.You can place an order for the barrels with Jim for whatever spec you want, but just a heads up on the in stock barrels he has.

I dont think you would regret a Shilen prefit barrel, I just installed two of them and they are both shooting great. Its a 1-8 twist and I guess I got lucky because both of my chambers allow me to seat a 108 Berger BT with the base dead even with the neck/shoulder juntion.

I also purchased a Shilen prefit in a 26" bull contour, 1:8, .272 neck. This is my first 6BR and I could not be happier. Super easy to clean, does not copper. I am able to seat 108 Berger at the junction as well. My barrel loves the 80 Bergers. I recommend you order a Shilen and wait... and then wait a little longer,14 week wait last fall). You will not be disappointed when it arrives!!

Good Luck,

AvgJoe

My McGowen 6BR barrel and Savage BVSS stock just arrived from Northland/Jim Briggs. Just waiting on a new bolt head and the go gages. :D

Just got my barrel back from Shilen, pretty quick turn around, thanks David).I can now seat the 75gr bullets out where I want them.I recieved a Wheeler barrel nut wrench not long ago.
Is a person better off using a piece of unfired brass of the brand they are shooting than using a commercial heaadspace gauge for installing a new barrel?

I did the same thing that you are thinking about doing. My rifle was the Savage 12 LPSS in 204 Ruger and didn't group all that great. Ordered the drop-in barrel from Shilen in the heavy sporter which is .700 at the muzzle and 26" long CM and blued and cost $318 delivered. Bought the 308 size bolt head from Midway for $18 and used all the small parts from the small bolt head. Shot it last week using 35 grs. of AA2230 with the 55 gr. Nosler BT and Lapua brass. Had 15 rds loaded up and they ended up with 3792 FPS and the three 5 shot groups averaged .492 for the 3 groups. I measured 6 of the Lapua cases with the Stoney Point tool and they were within .001 so I used one of the cases as my headspace gauge.
