Savage 340D

Hey folks, got a buddy that has a savage 340D in .222rem. Was wondering if any of you know of a decent scope mount for it, or if there's a way to drill and tap it?
TIA.

If it is a later model, there should be 4 mounting holes on the left side of the receiver. These holes are for a side-mount scope base. These can be found by searching on Amazon under "Savage 340D scope mounts". Side mounts are used due to the split rear reciever bridge on these models.
Maybe one of the gunsmiths here can tell you if there is a reasonable way to install a top mount, but I wouldn't count on it.
Good luck and stay safe.

Thanks SSL, I did notice them on Amazon but was hoping to find something more conventional. It's looking like a B square may be the best choice

No problem. I hadn't thought of the 340s for many years. Friend of mine had one in the '70s. Shot pretty well, but he always thought the mount was ugly. Used that as an excuse for missing!

I like the old weaver side mount . It allows for different types ( lengths and height I think ) that can be removed . CDNN has a cheaper one piece for $20 advertised currently .
The weaver is a 2 piece side mount , the base then the ring extension .
I'm not aware of any way to use a top mount . It may be possible to adapt a cantilever base off the barrel extending back over the receiver but it would be expensive .

Use the side mount. My father used one in .22 Hornet for years as a truck gun & I have one that I’ve used to learn to thread and chamber a barrel to use a barrel nut.
They have a niche for the serviceable and inexpensive market.

Back in the early 60 s as a young teen I was the very proud owner of a 340 with a Lyman Alaskan 6x in a Weaver side mount. I killed well over 1000 ground hogs with that combination. I would go to a local sportsmen club and goad the old guys with Rem 722 s into shooting groups for sodas or candy bars. The would be unhappy when the kid with the 340 cleaned up. Tuned my load of 21g of IMR 4198 with a 50 g Sierra Spitzer by shimming the barrel with cardboard. Killed some of those groundhog with Herter bullets also. I think they were called Wasp Waisted. Those were the good old days for a young fellows who liked the woods and shooting.

Back in the day, I know of a rifle with side mount and scope in 222 that went for $25 dollars. Guy needed a drink.

Yeah, I benefited from a few of those too. Never felt too bad. Anyone that far into the bottle shouldn't have a firearm anyway. Years before today's help programs.
